The Gliffaes - don't ask us what the name means - is an old fishing lodge with only 23 rooms, all individually decorated. Which is part of the attraction, giving it a homely, family-style feel, neither too hectic nor too empty.
Clientele are older, quieter sorts who like a bit of fresh air and nice meal, but it's not the snooty Barbour-jacket parade.
Good Eating
The restaurant is a 'slow food' restaurant emphasising regional, often organic food, which in this area of Wales means tender local lamb in summer and game (venison, partridge and the like) in winter.
For something different at breakfast, try larva bread (an odd Welsh type of seaweed bread cooked with oatmeal) and crispy bacon - not for everyone, but something to try now that you've come all the way here.
Summer is the best time for afternoon tea on the sun-bathed terrace, overlooking a little stream and the Brecon hills.
Good Sleeping
Book early for one of the four large rooms on the first floor (room 2 is specially recommended), overlooking the stream and hillside. Think rolltop baths and huge Victorian beds and ultimate luxury sleeps. The best 'facility' is the lack of noise - if the birds didn't wake you up you'd stay unconscious for at least a couple of days.
Rates
Rates are pretty cheap for the comfort and service you get, at around £90 for the smallest double room overlooking the gardens up to £220 for a large double with a balcony. Breakfast included and you can book and pay in advance for dinner.
