File this one under Major Bad Rate. The Atlantis in the Bahamas is offering a "Paradise Getaway" of 4 days/3 nights from $439. This sounds amazing, right? Well here are some caveats:

· You must book by Feb. 29th, so you have one week left.
· Rate is per person, double-occupancy, based on Sun. or Mon. arrival. Got that?
· It's effective for travel 4/27/08-6/15/08, basically when it starts to get warm where you live.
· It's only for rooms in the Beach Tower Terrace which is the cheapest tower on the property.
· Don't forget to add up to $81 per person for mandatory taxes, mandatory housekeeping gratuities, and utility service fees. Yikes, good thing we told you about hidden fees.
· Weekend, holiday & peak period surcharges apply. So basically you have to ask for vacation days from work.
· Worst of all, we searched several dates online and not once did we see the $439 deal. Unless the deal is $439 per night which isn't really a deal here.

And the cancellation policy is pretty scary.

If you selected Accommodations Only rate you will incur a 2 night's hotel charge if cancelled within 14 days prior to arrival. No-shows will be penalized the entire length of stay.

Anyone who books the Destination Atlantis packages which include airfare must cancel 31 days before the trip otherwise they charge $100 a person, plus air, and if it's under 14 days, two night's hotel charges.

If you book just accommodations only and you cancel 31 days out, they won't penalize you at all.

Sheesh. This package in our humble opinion is totally not worth it. You might be able to find a cheaper package rate than what we found (our results were averaging about $1,400 for three nights) by calling the reservations line and asking them what days/nights are the cheapest.

But don't forget all those added fees and once you get there, expect to cough up more. Ahem...Pina Coladas cost $20.70 About the only thing that doesn't cost money at the Atlantis resort is swimming in the ocean. But we're sure they rolled that fee into the room rate.

We still believe there is good in the world, so maybe there is a deal to be found at Atlantis. If you booked this deal or have booked a similar deal at the Atlantis in the past let us know in comments how it all went down.

Re: Crappy Deal from Atlantis? (none / 0)

While scouting out a vacation site for me & my husband, I spent a long, long time looking over Atlantis, checking the rates & fine print.

I came to two conclusions:

First, the only reason to go is if you have kids. The water park, pools, beach and all the good stuff are the draw.  Stay at another, far less pricey hotel, and pay the Atlantis day fee to access the groovy fun.

Second, there weren't many affordable offerings on the island that I found were worth my reservation, and The Atlantis was WAY out of my league.

(So we're going to the Riviera Maya...considering we are hemmed in by the Euro, rising prices, and mega-resorts in The Caribbean, Mexico may be the final frontier.)
