Earlier this week, we scoped out some "cheap" rates for the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Hotel in London. Although a rate of $477 was the cheapest we could find, that's still a deal for a Mandarin Oriental (ie. MO NYC has a $900+ rate.)

So what's this Mandarin Oriental like and is it worth our American dollars?

For starters, let's talk location. The hotel backs onto Hyde Park, but it's also across the road from Harvey Nichols department store and is just minutes from Harrods and surrounding Knightsbridge designer stores.

What's more, you're within a stone's throw of Buckingham Palace as well, and can witness the procession of the Household Cavalry from the comfort of your very balcony. (But we bet a room with a balcony and this view costs extra.)

The rooms have a suite-like feel to them, decked out with opulent wooden furniture including a large desk and exquisitely comfortable king-size bed. And should you ever need anything right away, there's a Guest Floor manager on every floor. The only thing that worries us is there's absolutely no mention of in-room internet so we're guessing that's going to cost something outrageous.

The hotel's restaurants and bar are some of the best in the city. We recommend hitting Foliage for lunch, where $USD 56 will get you a four course lunch overlooking Hyde Park.

Last but not least, the spa cannot be missed as it is consistently voted as one of the best treatment spas in the country. Take your pick from eight treatment rooms including the Amethyst Crystal Steam Room and the Zen Colour Therapy Relaxation Room and let the Spa staff take care of the rest.

The reviews of the hotel range from amazing to awful so we can't quite figure out what is going on here. It probably has something to do with how much money you put down but a few others quoted rude service from the bartenders and other staffers. Not to mention bed bugs.

So we're still not sold on staying here so if you have some answers that could help us out, let us know.
