As for the resort, it used to be the Fiesta Americana, owned by Grupo Posadas. The resort was only open for 8 months before being destroyed the Hurricane Wilma in 2005.
Now the same owners have relaunched it as the Aqua Hotel, a new brand of "high-end lifestyle hotels" (egads).
Here's how they describe the Aqua experience:
This radical new concept creates a hotel that is memorable, transcendent and unique, giving guests the feeling that the resort was created just for them. The vanguard architecture, good taste and attention to detail work together to create the “Aqua accent” and surpass guests’ expectations, letting them experience the true essence and superior quality of the hotel.
The Aqua Cancun resort has 371 rooms with high-tech amenities like flat-screen TVs and iPod docking stations and Molton Brown toiletries. On site there are three restaurants and two lounges, a spa, fitness center, a business center with the cute name B-On CyberCafe and a whopping eight pools.
Plus, guests get a bit of local culture upon arrival as each are greeted with "In Lakech," a traditional Mayan greeting expressing the staff's philosophy of devoted service and desire to please.
Rates average around $465 a night.
