SLS Hotel has been open for nearly a month now and it celebrated itself with an opening party last week. (Funny. Our invite must have gotten lost in the mail. Burn.) Eater LA has been all over the hotel's Bazaar dining scene yet the hotel itself has not received any valid reviews on TripAdvisor.

It's still in the hotel's early days so we're sure a few will be coming down the pike in the next few months. However, we wanted to let you know what we didn't like about this hotel. To be fair, we really liked this hotel overall. It is truly something innovative and exciting that LA has not seen before as far as hotels go. But not everyone can be perfect. Not even in LA.

The three things you won't like about SLS are after the jump.

1. Low Ceilings: When we toured SLS last month, we were unable to take pictures. This is sad on many levels but namely because we couldn't show you all of the Philippe Starck-inspired decor that we loved nor could we show you how low the guestroom ceilings are. This hotel used to be the Le Meridien and there were few structural changes made to the rooms aside from increasing the room size a smidge. The ceilings are just low and a little claustrophobic.

2. The Hotel Parking Fee: Normally, when traveling to a big city you don't need to rent a car. Of course, this does not hold true in LA. You need a car to get around here and the SLS's Mercedes Jet Van only makes drop-offs to SBE properties in a two-mile radius. No pickups. If you do decide to rent a car to take to SLS, parking it overnight will cost you $35. Don't forget to add taxes.

3. The Location: The hotel really straddles the border of Beverly Hills and Los Angeles but it's technically an LA property. (Case in point, the Mayor of LA was a guest of honor at the bell-ringing). It's on a busy stretch of La Cienega which is definitely noisy. We didn't hear any traffic while in the guestrooms but if you're lounging at the pool or outside of Bazaar prepare for some honking and tires screeching. Again to be fair, the Beverly Center is just like a block away. That may make it all better.

Room rates are holding steady at $424 a night for a fully pre-paid internet rate.

Thing #4

everything in that photo.

starck

I am WAY over the Starck craze in hotel and condo building interiors. I think it hit its peak with the Hudson, and now it's on the downslide. There hasn't been a strong enough name to replace his yet, however, and so we still him popping up at properties which are supposed to represent innovation in design.

Thing #5

The Mercedes Jet Van should get its own Thing.. What kind of hotel is so stuck on themselves that they only drive people to their company owned restaurants/nightclubs - but dont pick those same people up and take them back to the hotel.

Are they worried that the leather interior will smell like puke the next morning?

I was really optimistic about this hotel/brand but it seems like its becoming nothing more than Nazarian's other venues where if you're not a celebrity - well, your second best.

I'm not a celebrity

but I still appreciate deer-antler lamp-bases.
