Art Basel Inspires The Standard and The Raleigh's Towel Art

Rejoice: we have found the perfect holiday gift that you can distribute to that artsy sister of yours, your hotel-geek friends and your "practical gifts only" mother. Though today's HotelChatter holiday shopping recommendations were not half as fun to spend time researching as the collection of items we picked out at the HHonors store (they have raincoats for dogs! Come on!), this is still kinda kickass: towel art.

Yeah, that sounds fairly unexciting and likely conjures up images of monkeys and elephants built from cruise-ship towels, but think of it like this: you can wrap your body in art, people. The artwork is printed on the towel.

During Art Basel (December 4-7), four towels will be displayed at the Standard and the Raleigh as a part of Art Production Fund’s WOW (Works on Whatever) project, "a unique collection of everyday items designed by artist." Sales of the 60x70 towels — which are printed with art by Julian Schnabel, Ed Ruscha, Karen Kilimnik and Raymond Pettibon — go to support APF's non-profit mission, which helps fund major civic artworks.

You can check out the towels at the two AB properties during Art Basel, and they can be purchased for $50.00 at the Raleigh Boutique or online here.

We'd recommend that more hotels print art on their towels to make them more interesting to look at, but we suspect the art would hide the kinds of stains that stark-white towels would typically expose and, um, that makes us more nervous than than those creepy monkeys and elephants made out of towels on cruise ships.

They've also got them at Target online! I really want the Schnabel one because I'm a sucker for maps, but $50 for a towel is a bit steep.
