Best Celebrity Performance: Eliot Spitzer

Shutting out reigning champ Britney Spears, former New York governor Eliot Spitzer comes in (ha) at number one for our Best Celebrity Performance at a Hotel in 2008.

'Twas just this past spring that our Luv Gov was outed as having made arrangements for a little rendezvous with a very, very expensive prostitute in room 871 of the Mayflower Hotel. Going by the alias Client No. 9 for purposes of conducting prossie business, the Spitz actually did wonders for the Mayflower, putting the hotel on everyone's radar and bringing in record biz for the hotel's modest gift shop.

This was certainly not the first major scandal to go down at the Marriott-owned hotel — former Washington Mayor Marion S. Barry Jr. allegedly smoked crack there and House members interviewed Monica Lewinsky during the impeachment of Bill Clinton, for instance — but Spitz's little dalliance definitely thrust the ornate hotel back into the headlines.

Oh, and a note: by "best performance," we mean "worst performance that saddened, frightened and angered us all at once." Accordingly, we have a runner up this year: Madonna.

Since her pricey divorce from Guy Ritchie, the singer has been hitting up hotels all over the place all year long (sometimes even with new male companions). Most recently, it was the Hotel Gloria in Rio de Janeiro last weekend with a hot male model named Jesus; before that, she was shelling out almost a million on her stay at Four Seasons Buenos Aires. A few days later, Madonna shacked up at the Grand Hyatt Sao Paulo where she attended a special ceremony hosted by a Brazilian rabbi.

She, unfortunately, popped up at hotels all around the world this year — but in a different way than Spitzer (sorry; we couldn't resist).
