While heading up and down Fifth Avenue in the final days before Christmas, we followed the pedestrian flow right into the festive lobby of The Plaza. Bustling with activity as guests checked into their rooms and tourists checked out the surroundings, the lobby forms the heartbeat of the hotel, and you must traverse it to reach the retail concourse, the Champagne Bar and the newly-restored Oak Room restaurant.

Right as you enter the hotel from Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, you are greeted with a massive chandelier just grazing the top of an equally-impressive floral arrangement. Curio cabinets around the room display Eloise products and other goodies which may be purchased in The Plaza's gift shop downstairs. The towering french doors straight ahead lead into the fabled Palm Court, where people pack in everyday from 2-5pm for the $60 afternoon tea service ($80-$100 if you add champagne).

During our visit, the place was packed to the hilt and as a result, it was pretty loud in there. Just after the holidays we can expect the loud hum of activity to resume its usual hushed whisper tones, and settle in for another year until the pace again quickens.
