The Drama Continues for The Jane Hotel
[UPDATE: We just to reiterate that the Socialista club is NOT affiliated with the Jane hotel. They simply rent the space from the hotel.]
The tail end of 2008 has been a bit chaotic for Sean MacPherson's new Jane Hotel. The building's SRO tenants have been up in arms over what they say are the results of the construction of the hotel, which they've described as "rat-infested conditions, often with no heat or hot water." So far, they've staged protests outside MacPherson's famed celebrity haunts The Waverly Inn and The Bowery, calling him a "slumlord" and they have plans to keep going.
And today we heard from New York Magazine that things are getting worse for the "micro-luxury" property: the restaurant on the bottom floor of the building, Socialista (which has been a big draw for hotel guests), has been shut down. From Grub Street:
A note on the door says the club was closed yesterday. According to the DOH’s Website, a December 13 inspection found that the club wasn’t displaying “No Smoking” signs conspicuously, though it’s hard to believe this is the reason for the shuttering — let’s remember that Socialista is located on the bottom floor of the Jane Street Hotel, whose residents have been complaining about a rat infestation, among other things. It won’t be a shock if we find out these are related.
Yikes. Let's hope things turn around for The Jane in 2009.
