Hiding Away at Lanta's La Laanta

All this week, HotelChatter's roving correspondent Claire Duffett will be reviewing several beach hotels that she visited during her trip through Thailand. Got questions or suggestions? Send them to us and we'll have Claire answer them for you.
La Laanta Hideaway Resort embodies its middle name. Getting there requires traversing narrow, pothole-covered dirt paths, then descending down a “road” that more resembles a vertical climbing wall than anything intended for vehicular travel. The trouble of getting there makes it a true hideaway.
Located on Bamboo Beach, Koh Lanta’s southernmost beach, it is also the closest hotel to the island’s national park, making it perhaps the most isolated. The island’s mountains serve as a backdrop. Each of the hotel's 20 villas, all angled toward the beach, has a hand-painted mural on one wall. The whole place is very hip. When we visited, most guests were European families with fathers who enjoy wearing Speedos and children who enjoy wearing only their birthday suits.
In case the kids miss home, there’s a living-room-type area they call the “Cozy Lounge” complete with comfy sofas and a library. Few stay indoors, however, with lounge chairs strewn on the beach and surrounding the hotel’s two infinity pools with an adjacent Jacuzzi. A few of the more adventurous guests step away from the sunbathing and snorkel around the rocky patch of sea along the beach’s southernmost point.
If this doesn’t satisfy your antsy-ness, motorbiking through the hills of the park is highly recommended. You can climb down to beaches that are even more deserted than the one where Laanta is located. There’s also a quaint old town along the mangrove-forested eastern section of the island.
Really though, this resort is made for those who plan to do some serious relaxing and sun-worshiping. It's the best place for snuggly honeymooners we spotted of all the hotels covering the islands of the Andaman Sea.
Room rates here go for about 6,200 Baht per night, or about $180.
