CES In Vegas Might Actually Be Affordable

Further proof that Sin City is not the city it once used to be? Room rates are not soaring during peak conventions. In fact, they may even be dropping. CNBC's TechCheck reports that the hotels in Las Vegas are not jacking the rates as much as they used to in previous years for CES (Computer Electronics Show). In a letter sent out the registered CES attendees, the convention told them:
Those who have attended CES over the years and are accustomed to peak rates...may be pleasantly surprised when they book rooms this year.
So how "pleasantly surprised" will they be? We went to Expedia.com to begin a broad search for the dates of CES, January 8-11. The Planet Hollywood was asking for $339 a night and the Wynn was going for $446 a night (The yet-to-be-opened Encore was asking for $496 a night.) Not much of a bargain although last year the Wynn was asking $699 a night and Planet Hollywood was at $319 a night.
But the newly redone Flamingo Hotel had rooms for $202 a night and the craptastic Tropicana Hotel was super cheap at $106 a night (Last year it was $193.) Caesar's Palace was fairly reasonable at $292 a night. The MGM Grand was at $262 a night and The Luxor Hotel also has rooms for $156 a night. Not too bad.
The Stratosphere which announced $25 rooms the other week is a little higher at $116 but last year its rooms went for $180. So we're not super impressed by these CES deals but it's a start.
Have you booked your rooms for CES yet? Tell us where and for how much.
