Holiday Boozin' Tips From Four Points' Chief Beer Officer

December 19, 2008 at 11:55 AM | by Jenna | 10 Comments

Nobody has very much money as 2008 draws to a close, so people are forgoing champagne and just reaching for some trusty cheap beer. According to a new study by Four Points by Sheraton, 80% of people who threw parties this year ranked beer as their drink of choice, beating out champagne and wine by a mile (this is pretty shocking — unless the survey was done at frat houses). Also, the study found that 66% of those surveyed see themselves drinking more this holiday than last year (hmmm, we wonder why).

So you've got beer, you've got a strong desire to get drunk and you need to do something creative to entertain your guests. Enter Scott Kerkmans, Four Points' Chief Beer Officer.

Scott says beertails (as opposed to cocktails) are the way to go this holiday season. To kick off a holiday party, try out some of his festive ideas:

· Looking for a tasty new spin on the traditional eggnog at half the cost? Mix three parts non-alcoholic eggnog with one part pale ale, barley wine or dark abbey ale.
· If you are in the mood for something sweet, why not try a Chocolate Truffle? Mix one part Raspberry Lambic beer with one part Chocolate Stout for a festive, sweet treat.
· Looking for an interesting aperitif? A Black Velvet is the perfect choice. Mix one part Irish Stout with one part hard cider.
· Need something that goes great with traditional holiday foods like roast turkey? A Tart Caramel, a special creation of Kerkmans’, is the perfect pairing. Just mix one part Cranberry Ale or Lambic with one part Brown Ale.

And Kerkmans even advocates pairing beer with your traditional holiday feasts. Turkey with a French Saison Style Beer or an Amber Ale; Ham with an English Style Bitter, Weizenbock or a Brown Ale; Roast Beef with a strong ale or a scotch ale; Pie with a sweet stout or fruit lambic.

For more tips, beer facts and even a glimpse at your fave CBO's resume, check out the Four Points Best Brews site. Sadly, we could not find a link to personally invite Scott to all of our holiday parties, but we'll make these beertails and hope the booze induces drunken hallucinations of him. Next best thing, really.

    Black Velvet

A Black Velvet is Champagne and Irish Stout. When it is made with cider it is called the Poor Man's Black Velvet.

    Saison

Hmm... looks like the Cheif Beer Officer needs to get to know his beer better... Saison is not French, but Belgian (from the French speaking region).  I've seen Saison style beers made in other countries (US, Netherlands, etc.) but never seen on from France.

    @ hefe

hes probably calling them french saison because the original ones were made for/by farmers in the french speaking part of belgium.  thats why they're called farmhouse ale frequently too.
