Jane Hotel SRO Tenants Protest Outside The Waverly Inn

Yesterday, we learned from NY Mag's Daily Intel that the SRO tenants in the building that houses the new Jane Hotel were threatening to protest outside of Sean MacPherson and Eric Goode's more famous NYC properties, the Waverly Inn and Maritime Hotel. In a hearing this week, the residents had complained that Jane Hotel workers aren't being nice to them, that the new construction has brought rats to the place, and that the construction has caused them to be without running water on occasion. Not good.

Yesterday, the threat of the protest was nothing but a possibility — but this morning Curbed confirmed that its sister site, Eater, received a tip last night that said "...there [were] a group of people in front of the waverly inn picketing with signs about slums lords and the jane hotel..." So, we suppose the protest actually happened.

But then we dropped by TripAdvisor and found that the tenants aren't the only ones complaining about their residences being converted to a hotel — the guests aren't loving the arrangement either. Of the three reviews on TripAdvisor since the Jane opened for business, two mention the residents and the construction.

The first, from NewEnglandJohnny:

While I was there, all of my fellow residents were actual residents. Late night coming and going, folks hanging out in the hall, as well as personal possessions. Had to walk around guys on ladders, guys carrying bags of trash, plaster, etc.

And in a December 12th review, themerm says, "The tenants next door are from another planet and the service is non existant."

Yikes. We're not sure the details behind the "other planet" thing, but we'd love to know. And hey, MacPherson did tell us himself that he was fully prepared for eccentric residents kickin' around — he said this to us: "The hotel is going to be weird. And I like that about this hotel." But was he prepared for this kind of stuff?

As always, if you've got any juicy tidbits to share with us about the tension at The Jane (or the Waverly and Maritime, as the case may be), let us know.

The Rats were There Before MacPherson and Goode

I stayed at the Riverview for almost a month when I first moved to nyc about 5 years ago, and barley survived.  There were rats the size of small dogs back then.  And these things were mean and not afraid.  If you threw a shoe at them they would look at you like "is that all you got." They still haunt my dreams.

    The real story

Tenants don't bother the guests.  What bothers the guests are dust, debris, bed bugs, the sound of driiliing and hammering.  I have witnessed guests go down to the front desk screaming about the construction noise, drilling, hammering etc and bedbugs and the desk offers the a ten percent discount which is about ten dollars per nigh t off of the cost of staying there.  I've seen many people come into the hotel, view the room and turn around and walk right out.  I've also seen guests leave well before their scheduled departure date, some not even making it through one night.  Of course Sean Mcpherson and Eric Goode will say it's all kind of neat and cozy with just a few minor inconveniences.  What are they supposed to say ?  That they are running a craphole? One of their attorneys was in a hearing filed by hotel tenants asserting harrasment.  The attorney for the Jane Hotel, one Mr. Altschuler, stated at the hearing that the rooms are five by seven.  When the presiding counsel said "my god those are small rooms"  Altschuler replied that yes they were but they had been designed to house visiting sailors.  The Jane is advertising the rooms as fifty square feet when by their own attorney's admittance the rooms are a much smaller 35 square feet.  when people show up and see that the room is much smaller than advertised they often just leave out into the cold winter night in search of another hotel.

    you know what...?

the rats were there way ...before this contruction started!!!! they were outside next to  the main door ( sometimes one or two would dare to crawl inside the property and into the large garbage plastic bins located on the 5th floor or 3rd floor trying to climb out of there.
I lived there for 2 yrs. luckily I was on the top floor.., I know all those people who right now are trying to extort millions from Mc Phearson & Goode, I know the "wench" who is threatening the owners and demanding they buy her an 1 bedroom apt on 23rd street & 7 avenue ( in the heart of trendy chelsea...) if owners don't comply with her demands!!!!! her name is "Solange" from the 4th floor..., she is the self proclaimed President of the Jane tenats Association ( that's if you called that an association...) it's a joke!!!!

they been "dreaming of millions in "buy-outs" more than a year ago.., an attorney by the name of Mr Himmelstein told her that "... she had no chance in hell to get any kind of buy-out money..." that's when she started to scheme this little "tenant revolution" in the streets of West Village.
