Dubai's Palazzo Versace Hotel Will Have a Refrigerated Beach

Oh, good lord: the folks behind the new Palazzo Versace Hotel (yes, like the design house) coming to Dubai in 2010 have announced plans for a refrigerated beach.

Oh yes, we mean it. Allow us to clarify: by "refrigerated beach", we mean an outdoor beach that guests will go to — one of the last truly fun, free things to do in this world — will have a network of pipes beneath the sand's surface that contain a coolant, making the sand a lovely, cool temperature on top, thereby ensuring that no hotel guest's feet are uncomfortable as they frolic about in the sunshine.

According to the Times Online, there's more to this nightmarish display of excessive energy consumption:

The [hotel's] swimming pool will be refrigerated and there are also proposals to install giant blowers to waft a gentle breeze over the beach.

Is this really necessary? No. It's not. And as if there was any doubt, environmentalists are furious about it — though the President of Palazzo Versace told the times that he believed it's possible to design a refrigerated beach "and make it sustainable."

We admit this is kind of cool and we're curious about the concept, but we're afraid that by supporting such a ridiculous amenitiy that our environmental conscience would suffer a whole lot more pain than the soles of our feet would suffer on hot sand.

Better idea: hot beach feet? Meet flip-flops.

excellent

Wow this is a great piece of technology , making the sands cool so that the feet donot burn , Dubai is certainly challenging the world in technology.

The Beach

Sounds like a costly mission as it is to refrigerate the whole entire beach. I bet the electricity bill will go soaring, however, it will probably make the reservations even more pricey.

Oops!

I also forgot to add, that it is quick a shocking experience isn't it? Albert

My Friend

My Friend told me about it, I was just reading this post just a week ago too, and he said it was just marvelous. He didn't get to live in it, because well that would be super expensive, but he saw it in a brochure somewhere.

WOW!

I thinks that this guys should watch "An Inconvenient Truth"... twice! The world is running out of time for big change. WHAT ARE THEY THINKING WITH A REFRIGERATED SWIMMING POOL???? In Chile we have a lot of Chile hotels preserving the environment and being cool, like the one with the biggest swimming pool in the World: San Alfonso del Mar. And is ALSO low energy consuming.

Pure Decadence

The idea of a refrigerated beach, while a very good one, speaking from the experience of scalding my feet on a real beach, just smacks of pure decadence. It's like visiting the golf course and being met with greens made of synthetic grass. It ensures that the ball will always roll smoothly but it somehow just doesn't feel right.
