The Telegraph Overwhelms Us With Cozy British Hotels

December 16, 2008 at 11:00 AM | by amandak | 0 Comments

We love a good insider list of great hotels but in the UK the Telegraph has gone totally overboard with its recent "cosy hotel" list--how can we ever try out 50 different hotels?

But curiosity got the better of us because we want to know what a "cosy" hotel actually is. Apparently they mean a place with a nice fireplace and "buttered crumpets for tea", usually out in the countryside. Okay, that's cozy.

We still don't know quite how to tackle their overkill list of 50 hotels but just by random examination we can see a few interesting spots:

· Knockinaam Lodge in Portpatrick, Scotland, grabbed our attention purely because of its odd name. But now we know it also has a restaurant with Michelin stars so there are two reasons to try it.

· Shakespeare House in Grendon Underwood, central England was apparently Shakespeare's regular stopover when he journeyed between London and Stratford-upon-Avon, reason enough to check it out, we think.

· Pen-y-Gwryd in Nant Gwynant in Wales makes the list simply for having a name we can't pronounce; although it only takes guest on weekends during the winter so we're guessing it's in a fairly sleepy spot.

The British probably have this cosy act pretty much under control but we do ask that next time they give us a more manageable list. We can’t pay attention for that long, you know.
