The Thompson LES: What Kind of F'ery is This?

Two of us here at HotelChatter have stayed at the Thompson LES since it opened this summer — once in its early days and once quite recently — and have loved it. We dug the design of the rooms (both rooms were Studio Suites), were impressed with the service and have been recommending the hotel to our friends and readers all over the place, especially since the rates have been totally killer for a luxury boutique hotel in Manhattan.

But now we're thinking that perhaps we spoke too soon. We received a reader review today from someone very close to us — a seasoned traveler who happens to be a hospitality industry executive (not in the hotel biz) — who stayed at the Thompson LES recently and had an entirely different experience. He stayed in a Superior Queen room (which he paid $259 for) and hated it. From the looks of the photos he sent along, we can almost understand why; it's hard to believe it's the same hotel.

We'll start with things our reviewer liked: He was greeted at the front door by someone who "glided over with a big smile and an umbrella (it was snowing)" and was announced by name to the front desk agent (he got the guest's name off of his luggage tag — nice touch!) Once inside, he thought the lobby was "very attractive and very trendy."

And now for the rough parts. Here we go.

Checking In: Check-in was interminable (14 minutes), despite the fact that I was the only guest there. The other 2 clerks were busy with something, as they were shuffling papers around and looking important. The clerk demanded to SCAN my driver's license into a permanent photo scan. I objected, but she said it was corporate policy. Just examining my photo ID wasn't enough, they had to have a permanent record. It might have been easier if the machine had worked; it didn't, and that took more than 5 minutes.

Apparently, the elevator issues we had during our first stay are back and better than ever:

There are three elevators. One was broken and out of service. The second was malfunctioning and stopping at every floor. The third had a staff member on it cleaning it, but was available for guest use. The other guests were grumbling, so it sounded like this has gone on for awhile.

And now: the room. Oy. From the photo, you can glean that the room was not quite as beautiful and spacious as the Suites we'd stayed in — which is, of course, to be expected when comparing a suite to a standard room — but we'd agree that this room (which lacked the stunning lightbox behind the bed that we'd loved so much) was pretty "bleh":

Even for NY, it was cramped. The closet is ridiculous, more like a cabinet. There is no way any full length garment will fit. Thats because there are a couple of drawers inside and 1/2 of the minibar selection (non refrigerated items.)

There is ONE LIGHTBULB to the left of the bed. You have to aim it at the desk if you want to see anything, and there is no switch to turn it off or on, so reading in bed is out of the question anyway. There is one small, high intensity dimmed light above the doorway, where it will do absolutely no good...otherwise, the room is totally dim, and unsuitable for anyone with mediocre eyesight.

The desk is 30" wide, and is too dim to see anything. The desk chair is not a desk chair, it's a decorative swivel chair, and it's too low for the "desk" anyway. I am 6'4" tall, and I had to reach up to type. No matter, it was too dark to see the keyboard anyway, let alone reach it. There are no electrical outlets at the desk...you need to plug in by the bed, although this wasn't a big deal, one wonders why they forgot about it. BTW...wireless internet was free, which was welcome!

Yeah. Not good. Interestingly, he was told by the front desk agent that Shang was open for breakfast and not for dinner (which is something we don't quite understand since we were there during dinner last week), but when we called the restaurant ourselves, they assured us they were open for dinner, but not for breakfast.

Maybe something got lost in translation along the way, but we've still gotta ask: What the F is going on over there, Thompson LES?

    sounds like LES knew who the two of you were - upgrades are a sure clue.  time to start being sneaky.  fake names,  disguises, could be fun!

    in the title. it wasn't really just a gratuitous use of the f word. i just think its strange how you build a hotel from scratch and you still put in teeny tiny rooms. what's the point?

    Inappropriate

    Regardless of whether it is a pop reference or not, the use of that language is completely inappropriate on a site like this.  This is the second time I recall the use of offensive language; although this is far worse as it is in a bolded headline.  

    Perhaps you need to be reminded of your own site's User Agreement.  Section IV. Rules of Usage, Part D:

    "You agree not to use any obscene, indecent, or offensive language"

    If you don't abide by your own legal requirements, why should you expect the visitors of your site to abide by them?

    clarification - and some more of my opinion

    in my original comment i was referring to the upgrade to studio suites for the Hotel Chatter writers.  It is the equivalent of knowing a restaurant reviewer is the customer and making sure he gets the best table and attentive service.

    i think the title is funny, this isnt a children's site.  if it is ok to show pictures of kiki de montparnasse sex kits then this title is fine.

    small room size in new construction - nyc is tight, we all know this. building these rooms allows them to decrease their loss factor.  it is a great idea - if you price the rooms accordingly.  I have no prob with tight rooms (i have stayed many nights at The Pod, and recently loved The Jane) but i am not going to pay full price.   Esp. when i can stay at the Milford Plaza or Hotel Penn in a 300sf room for like $120 (not that i ever would)

    hotelchatter's anonymity...

    ...was protected while checking in and staying at LES (as it is at many other hotels.) no one at thompson had prior knowledge that either myself or jenna would show up there. the upgrades were just a coincidence. either that or girls get first dibs on the studio suites.

    Get Over It

    Let's all get over the use of explicit language- no 12 year old is logging onto Hotel Chatter to check out the latest industry news. No wonder Thompson Hotels are selling at $100 a pop with a product like this.
    Also, I bet that the guest may have looked past some of the issues if the check-in went better. 14 minutes and a copy of a photo ID is outrageous.

    what a difference that lighted headboard makes.

    Seriously, the absence of that lightbox headboard makes a world WORLD WORLD of difference in the room. It doesn't even look like the same hotel! Compare that shot to this one.

    Hmm.

    That is too bad you got such a bad room. I had a very different experience there and had a great room ( Room 1200) for a good price. I reviewed my room below. So sorry for the bad stay..that is the worst!

    Room for two...

    I had a mouse in my room, so did someone else on Tripadvisor.  They were very nice about moving me, not sure how nice they were to the mouse; but...
