If you decide that Sydney's not the place for your Australian New Year's Eve celebration, then we've got another tip for you: the Gold Coast, just a few hours' north in Queensland. Now we don't normally rate the Gold Coast as a great tourist destination but when there's partying to be done, this is the spot.

Like in Sydney, all the truly best places are booked out for New Year's Eve but one that still rates well and does have vacancies is the Hyatt Regency Sanctuary Cove. They've got last minute rooms going for A$359 ($235); luckily that's relatively cheap because the restaurants are charging a real premium rate for New Year's--A$175 per adult at the Fireplace restaurant and A$130 at the Cove Café.

The big drawcard at the Sanctuary is usually the swimming pool setup. It's more of a lagoon than anything and has a good pool bar (although we've heard it closes at 5.00pm--not sure if that early madness continues all through summer or not). The famous Gold Coast theme parks are all close to this hotel, and since they're the reason most Aussies hit the Gold Coast this is a big plus point. So for fun and partying as 2009 ticks in, this is probably not a bad place to be.
