How to Really Save on Your Staycation

November 6, 2008 at 4:16 PM | 0 Comments

Monterey County is known as one of California's posher coastal destinations, but as we told you in our Carmel Hotel Guide, it's perfect for a staycation and now the Monterey Travel Bureau is promising there is lots to do that doesn't break the bank.

Being the lushes we are, we're immediately drawn to wine tasting. Tastings are usually around $5 and if you really make your rounds to the area wineries, you'll really, um, get your money's worth. Also, please don't drink and drive.

We're partial to the Bernadus Lodge because we've had their wine and love the wine grotto mini-bar. Of course, staying there isn't exactly shoestring with rates starting at $415. (But search around for deals. We've heard about some good last minute rates in the past.)

If you splurge on a room, then save on self-guided tours of the many art galleries and nature walks in Monterey County. Also good for exercising post-wine. If you're into history, there's also the Carmel Mission Basilica (pictured) with an entrance donation of only $5. The money goes towards restoration so you can feel good about doing good too.

We're suddenly itching to get back to Carmel and despite the economy, it seems like we still have fun. Besides, we keep watching rates drop, since people don't stay in hotels anymore. Score for us.
