The view was described as a city/marina but here's a secret we'll let you in on: that slash always stands for something. Our view was marina slash parking lot slash city. So as long as we turned one way or the other, we had a good view.
The restaurant, Jer-ne--pronounced like journey but inexplicably spelled with an upside-down E--was great, if expensive. All the servings were small, but very rich, and we're still dreaming about the dessert menu. We recommend the "deconstructed s'more." Also, sit outside because they it feels kind of like you're dining on one of the million dollar yachts in the marina. (And be sure to vote on the weird Gingerbread Joust in the lobby lounge. Those frat boys need their prom.)
We're suckers for twice daily maid service, if only for the pillow chocolates, and the chocolates did not disappoint. But do you know what did? WiFi. WiFi was not free. We're not surprised and yet we're still enraged. It started at $8.95 per day, but you could cut a deal if you paid for five days or more at a time. The desks have something kind of like the plug in panels with an ethernet cable and some regular outlets.
We were told that they're breaking away from the whole "all Ritzes look alike" problem and the recent renovations are a nod to the ocean with sailboats and blues and golds. However, the hotel still needs a to deliver a more unique experience. It is definitely and obviously a luxury hotel, but it's nothing special.
Deluxe guest rooms start at $289 a night on weekends. Next time we might splurge for a club level room (starting at $359) for the complimentary food all day, complimentary cocktails (!), and a suite view from the club, but even club guests don't get free WiFi. Sigh.
Disclosure: Abigail stayed at the Ritz-Carlton Marina Del Rey at the behest of the Marina Del Rey Convention and Visitors Bureau.
