We Take It Back: Country at the Carlton is Really Not the Same

Get ready to be thoroughly confused: remember last week when we heard that the most recent Zagat survey had "erroneously" printed that Country at the Carlton Hotel on Madison Avenue had closed, but then a tipster wrote in and told us that Country had, in fact, not closed but had instead just re-branded?
Well, as soon as we posted the story, a different (and very reliable) tipster one who has been a loyal Country patron for quite some time came forward and let us know that he stopped by Country pretty recently (his first visit since the "rebranding" went down) and it is not the same as it used to be. Like, not at all.
To clarify: the upper-level champagne bar that so many of us (and our tipster) loved is gone now, and the upstairs area of Country is now mostly event space. The lower level is still a la carte dining, but the atmosphere is more casual than it used to be.
So, bottom line: if you have been a Country fan and were diggin' on the champagne bar, don't try and take your date there she will not be impressed when you escort her to the upper level and you're suddenly standing in the middle of banquet/event space. You know, unless you wanted to go ahead and plan your wedding on the first date and you have the presence of mind to pick a venue for the reception while you're out on the town.
