We hit up the hotel during our New Orleans trip last month and the hotel has a killer location on Canal near Bourbon but it comes with all the luxuries you expect from a Ritz. However, we're not so sure about the room decor which is looking a little tired.
But since you are getting such a bargain on this hotel, we think it's only fair that you read up a little on the history of the building.
Recognized by the city of New Orleans as a Historic District Landmark built in the Beaux Arts style favored around the turn of the century, the building housed the Maison Blanche Department Store on the first three floors with commercial offices on the upper eleven floors from 1909 until 1982.
The department store was renowned as the finest in the South and it was a centerpiece of life in New Orleans from its elaborate holiday decorations and window displays to its designer apparel and premier location. The city’s most prominent professionals had offices in the Maison Blanche Building. In fact, the dental x-ray machine was invented by Dr. Edmund Kells, D.D.S., a tenant of the building. The site’s history can be traced to the mid-1800s when several Greek-temple inspired structures housed early attractions including the Grand Opera House, the Union Terrace apartments, and the Varieties Theatre.
