Iraq to Get a Five-Star Hotel

Where: Erbil, Iraq
November 11, 2008 at 9:15 AM | by | Comments (2)

Apparently even war zones need new five-star hotels because northern Iraq’s getting one in 2009: the Erbil Rotana Hotel is due to open as part of Rotana’s push to expand across the Middle East.

The Erbil Rotana sounds like a pretty run-of-the-mill luxury hotel with 205 rooms and a Bodylines health club. Erbil is a Kurdish city in the north and is actually fairly well served by international airlines--even Austrian Airlines lands there four times a week.

But nobody’s going so far as to say that this place is safe; Business Traveller says:

Terrorist activity is statistically lower than in the rest of Iraq ... the region’s security situation is “relatively benign”

Statistically lower risk? Well, sign us up for a double room please.

5 star hotels in Iraq

I suppose even the worst places in the world have rich and not so rich people looking for accommodation. It could be a great opportunity for a brave hotelier to take this up. If the country becomes more stable in the next 5 - 10 years then the prices of bricks and mortar will sore, leaving some business men with big bank accounts should they sell. On the flip side, this is huge risk as it could be the first target terrorists look to bring down due to the fact it will probably be housing westerners as well as arabs. Iraq is certainly a very interesting country for business, but the incessant bombings in Baghdad frighten off potential tourists and businessmen.
