At New York's Jane Hotel, Size Doesn't Matter

Has it already been two months since we holed up for the night at The Jane Hotel? Although the hotel continues to open in stages, Sean MacPherson and Eric Goode's precious nugget of maritime (and New York) history has been boarding actual paying guests alongside SRO tenants since early September. So how's the barely-there hotel doing?

Forgoing hotel review sites for the moment, we headed straight to Flickr, wondering who else has uploaded any pictures from a Jane Hotel stay. Right away we found an amazing picture of one of the rooms taken by Flickr user chromewaves, a resident of Ontario, Canada who bedded down at The Jane only two weeks ago. His two cents on the place echoed our first review:

They say [the room's] 50 sq ft, but I think 50 cubic feet might be more like it. It's about the size of a queen-sized bed. Note that I had to stand in the hallway to get a picture of it. It's tiny and adorable and hilarious, all at the same time. I love it.

Then only two days ago did Yelp get its first review of The Jane, from john b. who happily relates both his neighborly curiosity and his brief time inside:

I'll preface this review by saying I haven't stayed here - but I have checked it out - and given a tour. I'm fascinated by The Jane and couldn't resist 'popping in' to see it for myself. The lobby isn't much and the hotel is still in the process of being renovated but the staff is exceedingly friendly and when I walked in and expressed an interest in The Jane, I was offered a tour of the hotel by the front desk clerk. Unsolicited. I was take upstairs in the manually operated elevator [which is kind of nice] and shown one of the $99 a night 'cabins' ... the rooms are tiny - and for one - but an intriguing alternative to a nondescript budget motel.

Finally hitting Tripadvisor, we found the first negative review from NewEnglandJonny, who seemed a bit unprepared for the experience:

While I was there, all of my fellow residents were actual residents. Late night coming and going, folks hanging out in the hall, as well as personal possessions. Had to walk around guys on ladders, guys carrying bags of trash, plaster, etc. Elevator out of order.

Sucks about the elevator, but a few days after NewEnglandJonny hated on The Jane, they received their first international tourist review (and a positive one, at that) from israelgamas of Tabasco, Mexico. This is for all of you who paid attention during high school Spanish:

El hotel se encuentra en Manhatan, en Greenwich Village, zona muy segura, es un cuarto pequeño tipo camarote, con todos los servcios excepto el baño que es compartido, tiene una cama pequeña...el precio es muy accesible y es una excelente opción para los turistas que no les gusta gastar mucho en hotel, ya que la maleta no reclama donde la dejes con tal de que esté segura.

Outside of The Jane, New York's West Village is resplendent in autumnal hues and the Hudson River brings the breezes up from the harbor to the doorstep. We shot the picture above just last night, while noticing that The Jane has yet to put any signage up other than those of the old "Hotel Riverview." We'll continue to check in on the old girl, but we're most desperate to see its public spaces, because if there's one thing New Yorkers rally around, it's a roof deck with water views. Keep your fingers crossed for next summer.

    My tup'pence worth

Just posted this on another Jane entry, hope you don't mind me repeating it:

I stayed here - 4th floor room for a week, while the election was happening.

And I really liked The Jane. Drawbacks first... the a/c is a bit noisy (but then I'm a pale Brit, we're not used to that kind of thing) and being woken up on weekdays at 8.15am by workmen coming to renovate the room next door was a bit annoying. And yeah, there's some odd smells coming from down the corridor... but if you've ever spent time in a dormitory, you'll be used to it. The Socialista club downstairs can be a bit noisy, but upstairs you're well away from it. The creaky old lift service can be a downer... but you can use the stairs, can't you?

There's loads of positives. If you're a single traveller looking for a cosy bolthole, it's great. The room was really well done; yes, it's small, but the bed was cosy and there's plenty of space in which to store things (and a safe should you need one). The decor in the renovated parts is lovely. The toilets and showers were spotless. The staff are really friendly. And the permanent residents? They're fine, most keep themselves to themselves, others will say hello and have a chat. If you get the older lady on the 4th floor doing her smalls who had a crush on John Lennon... say hello for me. And while I couldn't quite see the Statue of Liberty, being able to look across and see Jersey City was nice.

This has the makings of being a terrific place to come and stay - the location's wonderful, and once the rest of the building is fitted out I can see it being in great demand. I hope the permanent residents manage to find some kind of accommodation with the new owners of the business.

    I wonder if it'll still be $99/night in a year's time?
