Small, Cheap and Hip in Spain

Where: Spain

Think Spain, think hip and think ultra-modern, but without a too-distressing price tag, and you’ve got what some are saying is a revolution of hotel mini-chains across cities like Barcelona and Madrid.

A cross somewhere between boutique hotels and budget hostels, we’re talking places like the two Gat hotels in Barcelona; Matt Gross gave the the Gat Raval kudos a couple of years back but the Gat Xino goes one step up by skipping the shared bathrooms, and gets more love than the Raval. Although you should be warned that even the Gat manager says herself that “Gat is not for people who like to spend a lot of time in their rooms." Gulp.

Other cheapies on the hip list are the Chic&Basic brand in Barcelona and Madrid (and Amsterdam, if you’re curious). They’ve got pod-bathrooms in the middle of the room with transparent walls so you should be careful about who you share your room with.

Along with like-minded brands like Room Mate, these mini-chains are getting plenty of publicity as being easier on the wallet but still high on the cool factor. Tight-wads visiting Spain can now impress their friends--good to know.

Budget Hotels

Another very cool, budget orientated hotel brand slowy growing out in Europe is Citizen M. Their hotel in Schipol outside Amseterdam looks like its made out of stacked sea containers , but inside the large pod like rooms really work well.

Comfy, chic, cheap a new mantra for todays travelling economy perhaps !

Here in the US, I still think NYLO represents the very best bang for the buck and is far more user friendly than Aloft and much more personable.
