German Scientists Hawking Another Hotel Room of the Future

Over in Germany, the Fraunhofer Society in Duisberg has been working on yet another prototype for the "hotel room of the future." It would appear that this concept for a futuristic hotel room looks like an institutional version of the Jetson's house, but io9 reports that there are some nutty space-y amenities that are hiding beneath the curves and terrifying stark-white-ness of this room:

Its carpet is lined with sensors which monitor the guest's arrival and, without delay, heats the room to the required temperature. The bed simulates a light pendulum motion. "It feels as if you were being gently rocked from a seven meter long rope," project leader Vanessa Borkmann said. "It's like being in Nirvana."

The frequently humble hotel bathroom is revamped into the "Future-spa." Here infrared beams from the walls can instantly transform it into a sauna and up to two people can bathe in the whirlpool set in the floor.

Meanwhile, room service also gets a modern twist: at the touch of a switch, a robot delivers the drink of your choice.

We hope the robots don't make the drinks, as we're pretty sure our signature cocktail has to be done just so in order to please our delicate palates. Other than that, there isn't a whole lot in here that gets us super excited -- but maybe part of that has to do with the fact that we just don't think we will achieve nirvana by rocking to sleep from a seven meter long rope.

Call us old-fashioned, but we sorta hope hotel rooms like this start making their way into the market gradually rather than suddenly because while this sounds like a gadget geek's wet dream, a tech fest like this has a lot of opportunity for operator error and technical failures -- when all we really need is a bed, a bathroom and some WiFi.
