Marriott Also Has What We Want :: Plug-In Panels

October 10, 2008 at 9:43 AM | 3 Comments

Ta da! Marriott has Plug-in Panels.

Sound familiar?

We just wrote about Hyatt's similarly named panel. Both panels make it super easy for you to plug in your computer to hook up to the TV, plug in your iPod to play through the TV, plug in your portable DVD player to play through the TV, plug in your video game console (!) to play through the TV, and well, you get the idea.

Unlike Hyatt, though, Marriott's got all the cables for free already in your room.

Our favorite part is those outlets. We are so tired of having to unplug lights and alarm clocks and weirdo ethernet ports just to plug in our computers. These outlets are so accessible and glorious!

Blogger Shifted Librarian has a great review up of the new panels:

This whole concept is a great example of saying "yes" and making things easier for customers, as opposed to saying "no," which is what most hotels do by disabling the ports on the back of the TV in the room.

Marriott plans to have these rolled out in all rooms by the end of 2009. Howevs, you might still have to pay for internet. Which, seriously? Seriously?! Come on. We were supposed to have flying cars by 2009, at least should get free wifi.

Experience the panel, sort of, on Marriott's fancy site.

The same things are at Hilton

Looks like they are all using LodgeNet to do the hookups. http://lodgenet.com/products/connectivity.php

    Check out the "LaunchPad".

    Fees and outlets

Speaking of which....I just stayed at the Hôtel Bourgogne et Montana in Paris, which not only charged 15 euros (!!!) for 30 minutes of wireless internet access (which I would not pay), but I had to charge my phone, iPod, etc., by plugging my converter into the bathroom hairdryer outlet.  Now THAT's egregious.  That hotel just plain sucks.  I plan to do a job on them on TripAdvisor.  Worst "4-star" hotel I have ever stayed in.

    Vegas too

Really great versions of these are starting to pop up in newly refurbished rooms in Vegas, like at Mandalay Bay and Mirage.
