Quite well, actually. The Verve Hotel (part of the Clarion Collection) is only two blocks from the subway, which isn't as loud as it might sound and more convenient than you might think, given that it's only two stops into Manhattan. Staff are helpful and polite, and most importantly, the place is nice: the 87 nonsmoking rooms are simply decorated and come with flatscreen TVs, plus free continental breakfast, parking (a rarity in New York!) and Wi-Fi, all for around $170 per night.
Should you (or your parents) happen to stay here, be sure to ask for a room on the west side of the hotel for a view of Manhattan. The `rents will enjoy their stay and you'll look like a savvy New Yorker who knows all the cheap yet cool hotels in the city--to your nice, Midwestern parents, anyway.
