With a soft opening in January, a grand opening in February, a party in June, and lots of fun fall packages, we've been keeping our eye on Marriott's break-out new Renaissance complete with nautical-themed decor, the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel.

And they have finally arrived with a review in the New York Times. If you're in a hurry, we'll ruin the surprise ending for you:

If you're in town for a convention or to do business in South Boston, the Renaissance would be a no-brainer -- convenient, with high-end tech toys and a friendly, helpful staff. For families or those looking for a classic Boston scene, the out-of-the way location may override the positives.

If you can stick around, we've got the Times' pros, cons, and dirty details after the jump.

(We exaggerated when we said dirty details. After all, this is a Marriott; Bill would never allow dirt.)

The service was commended. When reviewer Amy Vershup requested early check in, she actually got it!

The rooms weren't ready when we arrived before noon, but the front desk clerk offered to call as soon as they were cleaned. At 12:18, as we were standing in line for tickets to the aquarium, my cellphone rang; anytime we were ready, so were the rooms.

Calling when the rooms were ready? That is really good service. Food was thumbs uped as well with fast and delicious room service and in-lobby Starbucks.

While the hotel may have excellent service and great views of the water (if you're in the right room at least), there can be serious drawbacks for touring families. For one, the pool size is not exactly vacation material. And more importantly, the location is more convenient for conference attendees than sight-see-ers. In fact, you have to trek into the city if you want to hit up historical stuff and that can take multiple rail and bus stops or a $7 cab ride each way (according to a TA review). And per the usual, the internet comes at a cost. Sigh.
