An Atlanta Hotel Goes Down The Drain

In the past few years, Atlanta Georgia's Buckhead neighborhood has become the place for new luxury hotel projects, everyone from the Ritz-Carlton, St Regis, Sheraton, W, InterContinental, Westin, JW Marriott is either building a hotel or has a location there already.

The development which really put Buckhead on the map is called Streets of Buckhead, and has high-end shopping, restaurants and condos in addition to Starwood Capital's 1 Hotel & Baccarat Hotel, both of which were to include residences. Now it seems both of those hotels have been taken out of the development.

Over the summer we reported how both hotels were named in the Streets of Buckhead's website, and models were even built showing the appearance and location of the two hotels. Then in late July we reported how most 1 Hotels were being canceled, and all mentions of it were removed from the Streets of Buckhead's website - but we still kept up hope that a Baccarat would be built there.

Now, we've lost all hope. Not only does Baccarat Hotel's website not include a link or any mention of the Atlanta location, even the streets of Buckhead’s website has been updated to say "A sophisticated world class hotel is expected to complete this vision" - where it used to say "A world class Baccarat Hotel by Starwood Capital." Doesn't sound too promising, huh?

We have to wonder though - how many hotels does Buckhead and Atlanta Georgia really need? Maybe this is a good thing after all, since no hotel is better than an empty hotel.

Buckhead on the map

I think the people who live and play in Buckhead would get a good chuckle about Streets of Buckhead "putting them on the map." Buckhead has probably been the most famous neighborhood in Atlanta since long before I moved there in 1991. As for more hotels, can't see the need. As wonderful as Atlanta is {I moved away in 2001 and still wondering why} it's not a great place to vacation, just a terrific place to live.
