While we would love to think that Babwa and Tom Cruise's visit the other day to the Gramercy Park Hotel had something to do with the imminent closing of the hotel's restaurant, Wakiya, we know that the restaurant has been struggling for some time.

Actually, the restaurant has been struggling since before its time as the initial plan for the hotel's restaurant was Chinois from Alan Yau. But that never happened.

Then Wakiya finally opened and promptly failed.

Now Eater reports the restaurant is closing on Dec. 21st. The official reason for the shuttering is Chef Yuji Wakiya's Wakiya's "longstanding commitments in Japan." But we're suspecting it has something to do with poor performance.

Gramercy Park is now going to renovate the restaurant and open something new by the Spring. Guess that means guests will have to deal with some sort of renovations noise until then.
