Fairmont Getting Really Busy in 2009

October 28, 2008 at 2:47 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

AmandaK rounds up Fairmont Hotels plans for 2009.

Looks like Kor Hotels isn't the only brand braving the sad economy with a smile on their faces. The Fairmont Hotels group have obviously already made their New Year’s resolution for 2009: go all out at opening new hotels in weird and wonderful corners of the world.

While we’re never very trusting of any projected hotel opening dates, if Fairmont follows through on its promises it’ll be adding two hotels before the end of this year and another nine during 2009. That the Fairmont Battery Wharf in Boston would open this year is something we’ve reported on already; the Fairmont Beijing is also on the list for 2008.

Looking forward to 2009, there are quite a few interesting Fairmonts in the pipeline. The Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club at the foot of Kenya’s highest mountain is a re-branding that’s meant to be ready early next year after a huge refurb.

A bit further south the Fairmont Zimbali on the South African coastline is going down the golf line for attracting guests, which probably leaves us on the sidelines.

In Asia, Fairmont is planning to open the Fairmont Yangcheng Lake in Kunshan, near Shanghai--we're wondering if this will turn into a prime geek hotel location because apparently one third of all the notebook computers produced in the world come out of Kunshan.

Over in the Middle East, the new Fairmont that’s intrigued us the most is the Makkah Clock Royal Tower, A Fairmont Hotel in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Here Fairmont is raving about the 131-foot tall clock tower (five times taller than Big Ben, they say) which is going to announce the Muslim prayer times.

And in slightly less exotic locations, Fairmont is opening up the Fairmont Pacific Rim Vancouver in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics, and the super-green Fairmont Pittsburgh is meant to be ready in fall of 2009.
