Last night, we hit up the grand opening of the Aspen Social Club at Vikram Chatwal's new Stay.Hotel. We came, we saw, we tasted the food and met some folks (at least one man -- who was not Vikram -- who claimed to be "basically the owner" of the hotel) and managed to snap this shot without looking too shady.

We came away with several impressions: the space is awesome. We have to admit that the Aspen theme looks a little bit Disney-world-forced, but hey, it's Times Square and Aspen is far away. The "forest" of birch trees was created by an illusion with mirrors, and that looks crazy cool.

A shot of the birch forest (plus a few more thoughts) after the jump.

Ok, we gotta say: we're notsomuch big on the food. Maybe it was because the food was being passed around on platters rather than served hot and fresh, but it was pretty meh. One memorably unmemorable item was a corn fritter we tasted, which was reminiscent of cold, deep-fried cardboard dipped in a sauce of some kind. There were sliders floating around, too, which we didn't get a chance to snatch.

One thing is for sure: the place was packed and the party spilled from the bar into the lobby, and, um, we sure would have hated to have been a guest at the hotel last night.
