UK's Free WiFi-Loving Hotel Du Vin Chain Opens in Poole

Visitors to the (not-always-so-sunny) south coast of England will know the town of Poole, a hub for summer resort visits and beach swims--and even home to Lord of the Rings author Tolkien for a few years. The Hotel du Vin chain just opened the Hotel du Vin Poole a couple of weeks ago and although they can't claim a "Tolkien slept here" room, there still might be a few reasons to stop by.

Can we just say, straight out, that we are very much in favor of the Hotel du Vin chain's philosophy of supplying free WiFi throughout all of its hotels, including this new one. Hotel du Vin seem to be going for a cross-section of the boutique hotel tourist market and business travelers too, which is one of the reasons they go for WiFi. Whatever the reason, we wish other hotels would take notice.

Apart from the free WiFi, the refit of this building--it used to be the Mansion House hotel--has gone a bit nautical, with the quay just a short walk away. We're not big fans of nautical, but if it's tastefully done we can live with it.

At the moment the Poole Hotel du Vin is offering an opening special of £109 (US$190) a night, including breakfast. Their rack rates start from £170 (US$290) so it's a bargain if you can get in there early.
