Ski Hotels 2008: The Westin Monache Is Now Open

Over the weekend, Angelenos prepped themselves for the "storm of the century" or so it seemed according to local news reports.

While we awaited four days of constant rain, all we got was one and a half day of gusty downpour that came on Friday and then later on Sunday. Total let-down of course. But the folks up in Mammoth were blessed with nearly 85-inches of snow. Time to get the homeys together for some fakie practice.

And if you want to head up and check out the powder, the Westin Monache Resort is now open. Early! The hotel was originally scheduled to open in the fall. Then we got word of a January 15th opening. But something changed and the hotel opened the first week of December.

The hotel had rooms available for Jan. 18-20 starting at $529 for a deluxe suite and moving up to $979 for a two-bedroom suite. But we had to call the hotel directly to get those rates. The website was showing no availability.

The Reno-Gazette Journal recently reviewed the place and despite testing out everything offered in the first-ever Westin condotel, here's what they said they would miss the most:

As I pack at the end of my Westin weekend, I don’t covet the flat screen TVs or the chi-chi throw pillows or even the dozen delicate Champagne flutes that room service obligingly sent up when I threw an impromptu cocktail party.

No, it’s the bed — ah, sweet bower! — that is the object of my affection. What if a down pillow “fell” into my suitcase, I wonder? What if the top sheet got “mixed in” with my mufflers? What if the duvet did a dash?

Surely the folks at the Westin will understand, I think naughtily. After all, they love linens, don’t they?
