After an interview with NYLO's GM Patrick O'Neil and a room review from Hotel Maven Stranger on a Train, we decided we still couldn't get enough of NYLO Plano, the newest boutique biz travel hotel that opened last month in Texas. So we sent our favorite girl Jenna, who just so happens to be a Plano native, down there to check it out for us. Enjoy.

From a distance, Plano's NYLO property looks right at home among the low-rise office buildings and cute retail plazas splashed across North Dallas' sparkling-new Shops at Legacy area. And it wasn't until we drove up to the property that we saw the funky, urban-chic brick-and-glass exterior--which, by the way, looks even cooler all lit up at night.

Admittedly, we had to drive a lap around the parking lot before we figured out that the bright red door was the front entrance, but we were more than willing to forgive when we were greeted by a cheerful front-desker who seemed totally on top of her game (especially considering she couldn't have had more than like two weeks of experience under her belt).

Find out more about a night at NYLO after the jump.

Check-In
The front-desker was super-helpful, asked us about our trip, described a couple of points of interest inside the hotel (The Loft, the fitness center), and had us sign a little sheet of paper that made us promise not to smoke on property. No problem. Into the giant industrial-looking elevator and up to our room we went!

Room Reaction
We were on the second floor--which, at the Plano property, is made up entirely of Pure Rooms (certified allergy-friendly rooms with air purifiers and allergen-reducing linens).

And ah, the room: High ceilings and walls of polished concrete, a chic suede loveseat, a flat-screen TV playing one of those trippy audio visualizer patterns accompanied by porny music, and one giant window looking down onto the street and out onto the vast flatness of North Dallas (to be fair, the only scenic things in Dallas are the hairstyles, so there wasn't much to work with on the views here).

The room was hip, urban, and lofty for sure, but without being cold or harsh thanks to the use of enough plush materials, like bright white bed linens and floor-to-ceiling drapes on the walls next to the bed, that softened up the look of the concrete.

What We Liked
The bed. Oh yes. Apparently NYLO has designed its own bed for use across the properties and they didn't mess around. When we went to sleep, it felt like we were falling into a big featherbed. When we woke up (to the iPod-ready alarm clock next to us, thank you), it felt as if we'd sunk into one of those firm-but-soft memory foam mattresses. If we knew what this thing was actually made of, we'd make our own NYLO bed and stay in bed all day reading hotel geek blogs.

When we finally did decide to roll out of the bed and get dressed, we warily touched our little toes to the concrete floor expecting the surface to be ice-cold--nope! Maybe they heat them or something?

Other Things We Liked
Lots of electronic goodies! The HD TV was awesome and mounted on a swivel stand out of the wall. The hairdryer was big, powerful and not wall-mounted. There was a user-friendly digital climate control panel in the room.

And hey--that eerie blue light that freaked out Stranger on a Train? We were told it was actually from the air purifier that's hidden under the furniture in the Pure Rooms; the glow has since been covered up so nobody else panics. Also, the safe was seafoam green--gotta love that.

What We Didn't Like
We weren't nuts about the bathroom because, well, we felt like our business was all out in the open. The shower itself was great--a giant, flat showerhead with powerful water pressure and a smaller hand-held showerhead made a lovely duo. But when we opened our eyes and turned around, we were surprised to see... our naked selves!

Yeah, the bathroom mirror is one long panel that extends all the way into the shower so you can view your nakey self first thing in the morning, if you're into that.

Speaking of your nakey self, we noticed that the big loft-style sliding door to the bathroom (which goes in front of the wall rather than into it), leaves a bit of space when the door is closed all the way and you can see straight from the toilet to the bed and probably vice versa. So we were happy that we didn't have a date with us.

Amenity Assessment
NYLO offers a free 24-hour fitness center with sparkling new machines, and an outdoor pool but in-room there aren't any minibars or small fridges in the standard rooms. Also, the closets are small, and there's only a shelf and a drawer available for storing your unmentionables.

Internet Connect
The WiFi was totally free all over the property and seemed to work perfectly. NYLO also has a business center that offers a big Mac desktop for any guest to use along with free printing.

Restaurant and Bar Scene
We headed down to The Loft for dinner in the evening and plopped ourselves down at one of the clear tables filled with straw (hello, it's Texas-themed). The Loft provides table service and its menu is packed with lots of healthy options, but we went for the Kobe beef sliders (which were fantastic).

Drinks were strong, not ultra-expensive, and our server was friendly and attentive....and she even agreed to model her Daniel Vosovic from Project Runway-designed uniform for us! It was a dress-- kind of an Audrey Hepburn LBD meets Judy Jetson type of garment; unusual, yes--but she gushed about how comfortable the uniforms are and assured us that she and the rest of the staff really dig them. No word from Nina Garcia yet.

We hung out down in The Loft from around 7:30 to 10 in the evening on a Wednesday and there were only a couple other people in the place--no drunks or anything like that. Had we needed to do a bit of work to prep for tomorrow's meeting or whatever, we would have had no problem.

Bottom Line
Considering NYLO is geared toward business travelers (Frito-Lay, JC Penney and some other bigtime corporations call Plano home) and isn't an extended-stay property like a Hampton Inn, the rooms aren't set up for guests that are planning to stick around for a while.

However, it's more than adequate for a weekend business conference (several sunny, bright meeting rooms of varying size and décor are located just off the lobby on the first floor, by the way), but not the kind of place that's equipped for two-week trip to scenic Plano.

How we spent our final moments at NYLO: In the morning before checkout, we grabbed a big, fluffy omelet in still-mellow Loft and pecked away at the computer, looking out past the plush hanging egg chairs onto the pool area. Lovely.

Rooms start at $199 a night.

Mmm...Sliders (none / 0)

Those look incredible.

How about outlets around that desk?  Are there plenty?  Power strip?  Lately I am finding many hotels are under compensating on the power outlet front -- I gots a lot of gadgets to charge when I travel.

I really like that desk chair that they have, I could definitely use one for my office. Looks like a very cool room.

Was there any sign of the 'local' artwork on the walls in the lobby (as mentioned in a 2007 HotelChatter article)???

i was kind of looking forward to staying at NYLO.  My usual trip to our HQ in Plano has me staying at Embassy Suites or the Westin Stonebriar.  Both were sold out and I happened upon the NYLO after doing an online search.  Anyway, I reserved a NYLO suite online for $199 that had a $65 discount promo already factored into the rate.  When I arrived to check in, the front desk clerk put me in a tiny room with bunk beds.  I told the clerk that I had reserved a suite but she couldn't find my reservation.  She asked if I could go to the back room and print out a copy of my reservation.  Kind of a hassle, but I did it.  As I was walking back to the front desk she told me that I was being upgraded to the LifeStyle suite, whatever that meant.  She assured me it was the nicest room in the hotel.  OK I figured.  The clerk asked me to initial my rate and sign the no smoking form.  When I looked at the rate, it was $279 not the $199 on my reservation.  I told her and she called her manager or something and they resolved it.  I was on my way.
As for the room, it was cool.  Very funky with a great balcony over looking the pastures.  It really was a nice room.

Started getting hungry and went down to the loft to grab some dinner and a few drinks.  Bar area was great and the staff very good.  Food was alright, those sliders look better on the picture, but they were ok.  Had another drink then went back to my room to send some emails and do some work.

About 9pm I called down to the front desk to order a couple beers to my room.  Sorry, we cant do that she said. Why not?  Apparently they have no type of room service at all.  Going to be hard for NYLO to compete with other hotels for business travelers if you cant order some beers to your room.  She did tell me that I could go down to the bar and order some beers and bring them up myself.  Kind of a hassle, but I did it.
So I order 4 beers to go. The bartender tells me he can only sell me 2.  I'm just going to my room to watch the rest of the basketball game, I tell him.  No deal.  And on top of that, he opens both beers.  Oh well.

In the morning I go to the restaraunt to have some breakfast.  Typical $13 dollar spread... eggs, potatoes, bacon etc.  I asked the waiter if they had any newspapers.  Most hotels deliver them to your door.  NYLO doesn't do that.  Kind of a hassle, but I got over it.  Anyway about 15 minutes later the waiter comes back with a USA Today.  Nice touch, even if it was yesterday's paper.  I just smiled and said thanks.

Now it's check out time and the front desk person tells me that the computers are down and they wont be able to print me a receipt.  They offer to email me one in a couple of hours once the system comes back online.  So they have me write my email address on a piece of scrap paper.  You know where this is going....

Now it's the next day and I'm back home trying to put my receipts together to do my weekly expenses and I have no NYLO receipt.  I call the hotel and the front desk clerk promises to send it to me right away.  That was 3 hours ago.  I'll call again on Monday.

As a whole, the hotel is an interesting diversion from mainstream properties and I'll probably give them another chance in a month or so to see if they can get past these growing pains.  They have a long way to go if they plan on keeping business travelers though.

Synopsis - front desk a disaster. Rooms nifty with great Wifi connections (although I would prefer a bathroom door that's flush to walls and shutters over windows that don't leave a 2" gap).  B'fast buffet tasty.

I booked two rooms for a Fri / Sat night stay. Requested both rooms on same floor. Checked in 1 1/2 hrs early. One room ready the other not. Told us to come back in an hour. We hung out in the oom that was ready. Called the front desk with about 30 min to regular check in. Was told she would check and call back. She never did. I went down to front desk with 15 min before regular check in. The chick you was to call us back "didn't have time to call back" - despite the fact she was just standing there doing nothing when I came down. 2nd room was ready - BUT not on the same floor. When I requested a change, I was told a room had been ready all of this time on the same floor and they didn't know why the original person hadn't given it to us when we checked in.

Requested 2 keys. Could only get 1 as key card macine was broken.  Land line phone in room didn't work. I reported it twice. First time the front desk person said "it's been forwarded." No it hadn't - there was no dial tone. It never got fixed.  At check out the printer was broken so after standing around for about 15 min, the front desk clerk finally said he would email me my bill. Two days later, I don't have it yet.

The first night, the bar was hopping.  I was awakened at 1:30 in the morning to the sound of some guy banging and banging on the door of a room a couple of doors down. He kept yelling for someone to get up and  open the door. After about 20 min of this, I got up and opened my door. It was a security guard banging on a door!  For heaven's sake - don't they have master keys they can use to get into a room in an emergency?  It was ridiculous!

So, how was the rest of the hotel? Conveniently located near Dallas tollway for easy access to airport. Convenient to shopping. B'fast buffet was tasty (tho expensive, as expected).  Bed was very comfy. Good a/c (a must for Dallas). Excellent Wifi. Fabulous huge showerhead with good water pressure.

Would I stay there again? Yes.
Do they need to get their front desk staff trained to act more professionally, be able to troubleshoot problems and get results? Yes. Do they need to work out the kinks in their front desk equipment (printers, key card machines, etc.) Yes.
