Our far-flung correspondent Monica Guy has once again slapped together a guide to place we have only dreamed about visiting. This time, she's summing up various hotels in Greece. Got a tip, question or suggestion about where to stay? Send it our way.

If you're in Athens and fancy a bit of island-hopping without having to hop too far, you'll be heading to the islands of the Argo-Saronic, right near Athens.

Aegina, Poros and Hydra are three of the best, but they're becoming more and more overrun by foreigners and tacky tourist shops. And we wanna be with locals, no? So escape to Spetses, a 2-hour trip from Athens by ferry and a favourite weekend spot for Greeks.

There are only a handful of cars due to strict regulations, and most people pop about the place by horse and carriage. No really, not just for the photos. And the place is packed full of citrus trees and pines - smells like you're in a perfume factory (or a just-cleaned toilet).

The 22-room Orloff Resort is a hip and quirky and as off-the-conventional-tourist-path but convenient as Spetses.

Family-Style
It's a contemporary treasure hiding behind the walls of a huge 19th-century house - a collection not just of rooms but of studios for couples, maisonettes for families or groups of six, and if you've got loads and loads of friends or a huge family you can hire a whole 3-level, 5-bedroom house, including a small jacuzzi in one bathroom.

It's run by three brothers, Christos, Nikos and Vassilis Orloff - a real pack of (not man-eating) lions. You'll lov'em.

What else you'll love
The cool, modern design - strict, simple geometrical shapes with splashes of bright colour, at the same time making use of stone walls and tiled roofs to blend in neatly with the surrounding Greek architecture.

The emphasis is on nature - bedside tables made from tree trunks, furniture handmade by local artisans. Water everywhere, from the central hydro-massage pool to the private jacuzzis in some of the bathrooms to the steam baths and massages on offer.

What you might moan about
You're kind of isolated here, which is nice if you want to be isolated, not so nice if you want to party - it's near the old harbour but about a 15-minute walk from town.

And there's no restaurant. Breakfast is included in the price, though, and if you hire a studio, maisonette or the house you can cook for yourself.

Rates from €120 ($175) to €210 ($310) for a standard double depending on season, rising to €220 ($315) to €415 ($610) for a 4-person studio or €650 ($955) to €1,100 ($1,620) for the 10-person house. All including breakfast and free transfer.
