Hotel Renovation is the game to play in 2008 and already there's been a few newly renovated hotels that are offering special introductory rates as a way to lure guests into trying the made-over properties.

Joining the fray is theHawk's Cay Resort in the Florida Keys which has just received a $40 million upgrade and is set to re-open on February 1st. The hotel is on its own 60-acre island called Duck Key located in the middle Florida Keys and all 177 rooms and many of its 225 two-three bedroom villas have a new look.

The resort will boast a new lobby area--featuring high-tech check-in pods, dramatic water-front sun terraces, rum bar with signature mojito cocktails and live music nightly, open-air beach grill, and much more. The Resort's design approach is West Indies meets South Beach with heavy mahogany four-poster beds covered in airy white linens in the rooms and spa-like elegance and light tones in the lobby and adult-only pool area.

Say no more. You had us at "adult-only pool area."

The hotel is now offering an introductory package called "Heart of the Keys" which includes Garden View hotel rooms at $225 a night or $255 a night for a Preferred Conch Villa. Normally rates are $395 and $555 respectively.

However, there are some restrictions. The rates are valid through March 2008 (excluding Prez Day weekend) but only during the week and a 2-day minimum is required. There's also a $20 daily resort fee which covers parking, in-room coffee, local calls and toll free calls lasting up to 15 minutes, and a Miami Herald paper from the gift shop. It also includes use of hard "Laykold" tennis courts with reservations, the fitness center and the pool, so make good use of all three for your money's worth.

Re: Hotel Re-Opening : HOTEL NOT READY!!!terrible

my fiance sursprised me w a quick getaway to Hawks Cay which was supposedly all remodeled etc. Upon arrival, we were greeted by construction noise, workers and dust. Lobby was mostly ready but furniture still not in place. Restaurant only serving drinks. NO HOTEL ROOMS ready and rather than the luxurious, dark wood, four poster bed, marble baths w/ glass showers we were given a "VILLA". basically individually owned condos w 2 bedrooms, stained carpet, formica kitchen, no toiletries like in a hotel, full size bed (we reserved a queen in the HOTEL) and faded bedspread. IF NOT READY, someone should have called, advised in advance, or at least given some sort of compesation for the lack of quality accomodations being given. We got nothing. The manager looked online and was shocked to see the difference in what we booked and the "villa" pics we took of our room. Regardless, she walked away after offering to have us check out w/ no fees. Reminder: Holiday weekend, and we had driven 3 hrs to get here. We ended up driving to key west, another 40 miles, paying last min rate for a decent room, but felt very frustrated and shocked by the lack of response from Hawks Cay. I even wrote an email to the PR person listed on their website, to assure others dont have this experience, and have yet to hear back!
Although once the hotel is fully functional it may be like the website, I feel the service and response from this resort was completely unacceptable!
