If you're nuts about Christmas, we've got the hotel and the town for you. Santa's Lodge, in Santa Claus, Indiana, doesn't hold back when it comes to banking on their namesake 365 days a year. You've got decorations and a toy train in the lobby, two big fat Santas out front, and more holiday kitsch in every room.

If you're the bah humbug sort, the novelty will probably wear off fast and you won't be left with much on your wish list. Expect basic hotel catalog furniture, flimsy plastic toilet seats, and thin sheets. Oddly, the "family suite" has a whirlpool tub in the living room. The family that bathes together stays together?

There's one giant draw besides Santa though: the great Holiday World theme park a two-minute drive away. We're talking about three gut-wrenching wooden roller coasters, crazy water park rides, and free sodas to boot. So while this hotel would have trouble competing as a 3-star in a major market, it's the prime present under the Christmas Tree if you're headed to Holiday World.

Re: It's Always Christmas At Santa's Lodge

I've been staying at Santa's Lodge for years when I visit Santa Claus, Indiana and have ALWAYS had a wonderful stay.  It is a fantastic place to bring a family, especially with young children.  The hotel has great decor that will round out the Santa Claus, Ind. experienc.  The rooms are very clean and comfortable.  It has very nice amenities including indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a little lake with paddleboats you can use for free, and the hotel restaurant (St. Nick's Restaurant) does a fantastic buffet that is making me hungry just thinking about it.

It is the closest hotel to all of the best attractions in the Satna Claus, Indiana area including: Holiday World (the most family-friendly amusement park in the world -- voted cleanest & friendlies by Amusement Today for 8 years running), the Santa Claus Museum (great free museum), Santa's Candy Castle (the nation's first themed attraction), Mushie's Memory Lane (cool antique cars), Frosty's Fun Center (arcade, mini-golf, ice cream, etc), Lincoln Boyhood Home & National Memorial (educational & fun!), Lincoln State Park (beautiful place for recreation) and Buffalo Run (feed the buffalo!).

Best times to come are Christmas (for the town's festival of Lights), and May or June in the summer (lighter summer crowds than July & Aug).

Bottom line this hotel has the best location in the area, great accomodations, great amenities and fantastic value!

Not so great...

Santa's Lodge is all about telling you how great it is, but not delivering after the sale. Two queen beds are really two full beds. Extras like "dinner with Santa" is a farce and will leave you having to explain to your children that Santa is stressed and having a bad day. The entire place is for adults and seniors, not children.

Dinner with Santa was nothing more than an advertisement to the locals telling them how great it is, while ignoring their own advertisements that brought paying customers to the lodge. Go to your local civic center for Christmas dinner and you wont be able to tell the difference.

My wife and I found ourselves avoiding the lodge with the children as much as we could, opting to take them to the Candy Castle or Land of Lights. I would avoid Santa's Lodge unless you are ready to spoil the magic of Santa for your children.
