Sign of the Apocalypse: Six Columbus To Open Third Week of October

We were planning on doing a story today where we would note the passing of Summer without an opening of the eternally unopened Six Columbus. While that's true--Six Columbus is still unopened--it won't be that way for long. Can you believe it?

We hit up the hotel website and nearly fell off our chair when we noticed the "Reservations Open Spring 2007" line had been replaced with...wait for it...a real reservations number: 212-204-3000.

We grabbed our phone as fast as possible and called it up. We spoke to the main operator who said, "Good Morning, Welcome to Six Columbus" before we were passed onto the actual reservations department. Since the sun had just risen here at HotelChatter West, we thought we may have still been asleep and dreaming but no, we spoke with a real live reservations agent who told us that Six Columbus is "looking at opening the third week of October." That's about October 15th according to the Gregorian calendar.

Overall, this is great news. And we totally believe it as spies on the ground in NYC said that all of the netting has come off the top of the building. Yes, we bag on Six Columbus a lot but it's just our way of showing Pomeranc just how much we want to see behind the curtain. Well, that and who can resist posting all those photos of Jason hanging with models.

But in the midst of our giddiness, the bad news hit us hard. The smallest room in the hotel, the Pod room, is 175-sq.ft. and is going for $495 a night. Holy Crap. The next size up is a queen superior room at 200-sq.ft. for $515 a night.

Man, those construction costs must have been skyrocketed way past the original budget for Thompson Hotels to charge those prices. Then again, considering the Mandarin Oriental charges $1,000 a night across the street, this probably looks like a bargain to some rich, business travelers with a pocket full of Euros.

    For Real?

Well, well, well.  The hotel that cried wolf one to many times is actually opening?  Had to happen.

$495 for 175 square feet?  Yikes that sounds Schrager Hudson Hotel circa 2000 does it not?

I just found a courtyard room at the Mercer in late October, 250 sq ft, for $595.  And a double at the Pod Hotel for under $250 a night.

Hmm.  Will be interesting to see what 6 Columbus has after its many years of renovations.  For that price, and those room specs, it better have something, that is for sure.

    Does this mean....

that Axl Rose will be releasing Chinese Democracy soon?

Anyways, I'm pretty excited about Six Columbus opening even after all the crap they put us through. All those failed opening dates and etc.

But whether I will actually stay here, who knows. I mean, I love Blue Ribbon sushi and the rooftop lounge will be killer but $495 for a Pod room in midtown??

    Battle of the bars?

I have no idea what it'll be like, but I guarantee that the 6Co rooftop bar will be far superior to the Hudson Hotel garden. Not for the non-existent views at 6Co, mind you, but for the lack of a horrible crowd. At least for the first few weeks, that is.

Juliana, now that the hotel is open, is it time to cast an unwavering eye on Blue Ribbon and the roof deck??
