We greedily noticed a plate of homemade chocolate chip cookies in the all-wood lobby, and gleefully wolfed them down as we were checked into our room. With little energy, we dragged our bags down a gravel path to a wooden cabin housing two suites. We had the one on the far end, away from other people. Hoo-rah.
It turned out to be a pretty groovy suite - a huge-ass bed, a gigantic fireplace (only it didn't have a switch to turn it on and off. You had to light it with a long match and some toggling of the gas, and we were too fried to get it going.)
A mini-fridge, a giant bathroom, cross-beams on the ceiling. The bonus? The suite comes with your own porch, complete with citronella candle, ashtray (yes!!), and two rocking chairs, overlooking a little creek below, and the mighty Rogue just beyond.
In the morning, we took a walk down to the banks of the Rogue. Watch your step, or you'll be floating downriver without a paddle in a heartbeat. The grounds of Weasku Inn (as in, "We Ask You In") are charming, with Adirondack chairs, and a spate of little cottages outfitted similarly. The inn is described as sitting on ten acres, but I guess they are smaller than they appear.
For breakfast, we made our way up to the main lodge, where they had no chocolate chip cookies, but instead bagels, muffins, coffee, tea, oatmeal, and more. Obviously we had missed the daily wine and cheese tasting, and the weekend barbecue on the lodge deck.
But we didn't miss the picture of Clark Gable in the main room, his gorgeous portrait sitting just underneath the disembodied head of a poor woodland creature. Back in the day, Weasku was a hotel/fishing lodge, the primary destination for many a Hollywood celebrity looking to escape the fast pace of Tinseltown. These days, you can still get away from it all and get a kick out of backcountry accoutrements in the main lodge and rooms, like rods, snowshoes, and canoe paddles, even if your primary interest isn't field and stream.
