Favorite Hotel Revolving Restaurants

September 19, 2007 at 4:55 PM | by markj | 1 Comment

Revolving restaurants atop hotels may remind some of the eighties, but we think they are timeless classics. There is just something about having drinks and a meal whilst in slow rotation that appeals to us.

Seattle architect John Graham is the person credited with inventing the revolving restaurant when he created Honolulu's La Ronde in 1961. La Ronde is long gone, but Graham's idea really took off in big city centerpiece hotels during the eighties.

We are guessing we aren't alone in our love for epicurian circumnavigation, so here is our list of the top hotel revolving restaurants.

San Francisco: Hyatt Embarcadero: Equinox Restaurant
360-degree views of EssEff and a decent martini.

Quebec City: Hôtel Loews le Concorde: Restaurant L'Astral
Many people actual come here for the dinner, which is high quality.

Tasmania: Wrest Point Hotel Casio: The Point Revolving Restaurant
Spectacular harbor and mountain views.

Vancouver: Empire Landmark Hotel: Cloud 9
It takes 1 hour and 20 minutes for Cloud 9 to complete one revolution.

Feel free to add your revolving choices here.

Atlanta -- Westin Peachtree Plaza -- Sun Dial Restaurant. 72 floors high with a glass enclosed express elevator ride to the top.

Montreal -- Delta Hotel Centre Ville -- Tour de Ville Restaurant.  The Mardi Gras theme of the decor is a bit wild but the view is first class. 1/2 of the time it's the downtown area, the other 1/2 its a view out across the river and beyond.  It did feel a  bit strange as I was the only diner there the evening I went.  The hotel is connected to the tunnel and subway system so it's easy to get to on foot.
