College Football Hotel Map: Where to Stay Near UT Austin

September 18, 2007 at 3:14 PM | by | Comments (3)

The college football season is in full swing, so we here at HotelChatter are doing our best to help you fans support your alma mater in the best way we know how, with our College Football Hotel Map, a guide of where to stay when you attend the games.

The next school on our list is the University of Texas, Austin whose team is currently ranked #7 according to the AP's Top 25 College Football rankings.  Austin is pretty much known for two things---being the live music capital of the world and for Longhorns football. Everybody all together now: "Hook 'Em Horns."

So there are plenty of hotel options in this city but to be honest, none of them really stand out and that's mostly because guests frequently complain of parties, loud music and dirty rooms. Perhaps Austin is the victim of too many concert festivals and football tailgating parties. Nevertheless, we got our cleanest picks after the jump.

· Cleanest and Closest to the Stadium: DoubleTree Suites

This DoubleTree is within walking distance to the Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium and it just so happens to be  a good hotel for families, judging by some of the reviews. However, if you plan on bringing the fam in the mini-van several reviewers warned the parking garage is tiny and expensive about $12 a night. In actuality, that's pretty cheap compared to the standard $28 rate in bigger cities.

The rooms got props for being clean and modern-looking and the staff got props for being helpful. Rooms average about $198 a night.

· Second Cleanest and Closest to the Stadium: Sheraton Austin

This Sheraton was once the Austin Marriott Capitol but has since undergone and it looks like it may still be undergoing some renovations. So request a renovated room to get the cleanest experience. Just remember new rooms come at a new price of $265 a night.

· Kinda Clean and a Little Further Away: The Omni Hotel Downtown

The Omni here in Austin has the same "Get your Game on" package as it offers in Los Angeles, starting at $249 a night. Most reviewers thought this place was fairly decent even if the accommodations were a little drab. But we think if you want to find a party in your hotel this might be the place:

Maybe I'm getting old and fussy, but being awakened repeatedly by drunken sorority girls yelling and slamming doors after 2am is not acceptable. Yes, it was a Saturday night, and yes, this hotel is walking distance of the bars on 6th street, but I still expect to be able to get a few hours of sleep

· A Hotel to Avoid: The Days Inn Austin University/Downtown

The first review on TripAdvisor for this place is titled "Pubic hair infused towels and dirty carpets!" But it's like only $70 a night.

As always we do this based on what we know and what we have researched but should you have your own recommendations or tips, then please share with us.

Perhaps, Keep the Longhorns Out of the Hotels Too?

Hilton Austin

Though it was a couple years ago, and the place was brand spankin' new then, I can vouch for the Hilton Austin -- no idea if it is close to the stadium-- it is right in town.

Though when I go to Austin I always try to stay at Hotel San Jose-- it is always sold out.

UT football hotels

@M G - the Hilton Austin is downtown off 5th st whereas the stadium is up off of 21st street, about 15 blocks north. I recommend you stay at the new AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center right on campus.

Hotel San Jose is a great choice but it is South of Town (Ladybird) Lake.

If you are just going for the football game, you can get your room turned into a sports party room before you arrive. For UT:

University of Texas Football Pregame
University of Texas Football Postgame

Especially if you are coming in from out of town, these packages allow you to celebrate before and after at any hotel without dying in the hot Texas sun.
