On 44th Street in midtown Manhattan, the Mansfield Hotel is a display of history and culture, recently renovated and restored sticking closely to its original 1904 routes. Trivia of the day: JB Yeats and rumored Great Gatsby inspiration Max von Gerlach both lived here earlier last century.

Today quite normal people stay at the Mansfield (or drink at its bar) and the new restoration should please most. While the old elegance remains, the services available to guests have been brought up to date, including free Wifi, free access to the business center, same day cleaning and 24 hour room service.

The 126 rooms (including 27 suites) are all "gracefully masculine" in their decor (think Great Gatsby) and feature wood heavily. But they are modern enough to sport a flat screen TV, an I-pod docking station and a laptop safe.

The fitness center is brand new, and includes Italian-design gym and weight equipment, along with a pretty nifty-sounding loft above it where you can stretch or practise yoga and meditation. At the moment they're running a Summer in the City package from $299 per night including breakfast and a picnic basket lunch.
