Mrs. Tennessee's Snakebite at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort 'Worse Than Childbirth'

This might take the prize for this week's wackiest hotel news story: Last Sunday, Mrs. Tennessee, a contestant in the 32nd Mrs. America contest, was bitten by a rattlesnake while walking to rehearsals at the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, where the pageant has been underway since August 22. The wily herp sunk its fangs into her foot and slithered away.

Mrs. Idaho, a trained nurse and fellow contestant, removed the fang, paramedics arrived and Mrs. Tennessee, a.k.a. Christina Ryan, was taken to a local hospital for treatment. She said the pain between the time of the bite and the time the anti-venom meds kicked in was worse than childbirth. The 28-year-old event planner has an eighteen-month old. Mrs. Tennessee spent the night in the hospital.

Apparently, she does not begrudge the resort. Mrs. Tennessee was back at Loews Ventana Canyon the next day, according to press reports. Fox News -- those snakes! -- wondered if there was some sort of "Miss Congeniality" plot behind the snake bite.

MORE

As for whether the snake was planted there in a "Miss Congeniality" sort of plot to rig the upcoming pageant -- which unlike Miss America is for married women -- the executive director of the Mrs. Tennessee America Pageant said she didn't think that was the case.

"I would certainly hope not," Delayna Bridges told the newspaper, laughing. "Mrs. Arizona won Mrs. America last year, so, hopefully, they are feeling pretty happy right now and not feeling the need to sabotage our girl."

We would hope not. Besides, there are 48 other states. We just won't know until the fat lady sings. The pageant takes place next Wednesday. It will be televised on September 21. As for the Loews Ventana Canyon, we doubt the publicity will hurt the property. After all, they can just remind people that Arizona is the U.S. snake-bite capital. You know Visit Tucson won't!

    Really terrific last sentence:

    "You know Visit Tuscon won't!"

Aside from the atrocious grammar and utter meaninglessness of this statement, Tucson is spelled incorrectly. Might I suggest: http://www.dyslexiacure.com/

Other than that I love hotel chatter! Thank you for the wonderful blog.  You have a fan in San Diego.

    Tuscon, Tucson

Thanks for pointing that out. We've fixed it. But that's a common spelling error. So common we think the city name should be changed to Tuscon. Anyways, hope this last sentence is not so "atrocious" for you anymore.

Oops. That was a typo. I know Tucson is not Tuscan with an "o." (Please see first paragraph.)

Visit Tucson is the local tourism board. I hope the link helps.

    Have a great holiday weekend.

I'm off to feed our pet snake.
