One of our favorite bedtime flip-throughs is the Small Luxury Hotels of the World directory. We have been known to drift off to the Land of Nod with visions of the collection's 400-plus hotels, from nearly 70 countries, in our head. So we note with interest that the latest U.S. property to join the portfolio is The Lodge at Woodloch.

The 58-room property is located in what used to be commonly referred to as the Poconos but has more recently been recast as Pennsylvania's lake region. So, no borscht belt offerings at this stop. The Lodge is isolated, on 75 woodland acres. Judging from the photos on its website, the décor is understated sumptuous. Reviews on TripAdvisor are highly favorable, with one kvetch about an inferior treatment and another about a less-than-helpful reservationist. MORE

Here's a detailed description from the SLH's press release announcing the Lodge at Woodloch as a new member:

If the vistas are not enough, The Lodge's Spa boasts 27 treatment rooms including 14 massage rooms, six facial rooms, three wet rooms, two couples' suites and two treatment combination suites leaving every guest to want for nothing. The spa also boasts a full service hair salon, private men's and women's lounges, an Aqua Garden with coed therapeutic soaking pools and a 3,500 square foot Cardio Weight Studio. Other pursuits reign supreme at The Lodge when not being pampered in the spa such as indulging in gourmet spa cuisine, access to a private golf course adjacent to the property, a one-mile paved Nature Trail, an art studio for the creative set and a private 15-acre lake offering row boating, kayaking and fishing.

Properties join SLH primarily for marketing purposes. The collection has a turnover of about 10% a year. In the Americas, there are currently 95 properties. We were not able to get an exact figure for current U.S. or North American properties. (We've got the 2006 directory on our night table.)

The Lodge is currently running a fall getaway special: Through October 31, you can save $100 per person per night. With the savings, rates start at $375 per person per night and go as high as $885 per person per night. The resort must be doing something right. In its first year, it made Conde Nast Traveler's Hot List (2007) and Forbes.com's "10 Most Luxurious Spas in the U.S."
