[Ed. Note: Here to review the second episode of Welcome to the Parker is our very own Jenna, who is currently enrolled in the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University. Enjoy.]

After the season premiere of Welcome to the Parker, Bravo's new reality show that goes behind the scenes of the Parker Palm Springs, we were left wondering whether or not the staff featured on the show were at all capable of running a legitimate business. After episode two, we wonder no more.

A rundown and review after the jump.

MORE

LAST WEEK'S FAVORITES

Samir is back, and apparently he is not *the* man in charge. There is an official General Manager on the scene now who appears to know what he's doing (more so than Samir, anyway), so we're assuming Samir is actually the Front Office manager or something. This certainly doesn't explain why Samir is running around the kitchen tasting dishes for the restaurant, especially since we met the F&B director in this second episode as well. But hey, we learned not to ask questions last week. We dislike Samir more.

Our friend Andrea has decided to take the Director of Catering, the inexperienced and super-stressed Michael, to do yoga with her in the interest of professional development. Ummm... ok. More on Michael in a minute.

Nathan, the dorky/cute/immature actor hired to play the roomservice guy, continues to screw up the simplest tasks for our entertainment. Also, memo to Nathan and the Parker staff: when a guest calls and asks for ice-- no matter what the quantity-- it is not polite or professional to ask them why they need the ice. It's not costing you anything. It's frozen water. It's also not nice to call a guest weird if he's hiding under his sheets when said ice is delivered, considering, you know, there's a huge camera crew accompanying the delivery.

THE JONATHAN ADLER SITUATION

Jonathan Adler designed (this term is thrown around a lot-- we're thinking he just picked out the decor) the property and took the opportunity to roll on into the Parker and piss off the GM in spectacular fashion.

Accompanied by a dog named Liberace (seriously), Adler picked on the teensiest lobby details and demanded the management hire a "fluffer" to fluff the pillows and over-the-top window treatments around the hotel. Samir was all for it. The HR dragon lady was not.

Ok, the guy decorated the hotel. That's it. As the GM said, now that the property is up and running, he needs to lay off and let the "experts" do their jobs.

The end of the episode featured a nice little argument between Adler and the GM. The GM didn't want pets to be allowed in the hotel anymore and Adler wouldn't hear of it. In a stunning display of manliness and fine professional judgment, the two of them settled the dispute with a game of ping pong. (What is with this show and ping pong?)

Adler won the duel. His victory speech: "I mean, ugh. What's next, are they not going to allow children in this hotel?" Um, come to think of it, has anyone seen a single child on the show yet?

Much to the relief of the GM, Jonathan did eventually leave the property, but not before installing a vintage sign in the lobby that says "DRUGS"...no, seriously. Also in this scene, we see our roomservice buddy walking right on through the lobby carrying a tray full of dirty dishes like it's totally cool.

MICHAEL THE ALL-STAR CATERING MANAGER

While Jonathan Adler obsessed over annoying details, catering manager Michael was busy not caring about any details at all!

Bacardi (the booze people) wanted to hold a marketing summit or some such at The Parker and Michael was put in charge of the account. He messed up almost everything there was to mess up, took no responsibility when the pastry chef threw a hissy fit about being asked to make cupcakes on her day off , and then addressed his mistakes with what should become every catering manager's personal motto in five-star hotels everywhere. Let's see, it was something along the lines of "I can't imagine the guests will even care; they'll be so happy to be in Palm Springs that they won't be looking at details."

LESBIAN SCAVENGER HUNT

The concierge, John, seemed to be the only employee on last night's show who acted professional and actually did his job. In a super cute and totally Bravo-esque portion of the episode, he helped a newlywed lesbian couple have the perfect romantic weekend at the resort, complete with a scavenger hunt. He is now our favorite and can rock that pink jacket like nobody we've ever seen.

Ok, this show can not be good for the Parker's reputation at all. What are they thinking?

More importantly, what are your thoughts on this? Comment away!

Re: Welcome to the Parker (none / 0)

Hey Jenna! I am going to be a freshman this year at Cornell's Hotel School and am really excited. But anyway, about the episode last night.

First of all, I could not believe the way the staff spoke to guests. Just their choice of words was appalling! I mean, it is a common rule not to use slang, like Nathan did. Maybe I just do not know anything about the Parker's revolutionary pseudo 5 star service.

Secondly, Michael, that guy who planned the Bacardi event, did an awful job. The chairs are a BIG DETAIL. I mean, come on, they are one of the two of the most obvious things needed at an event like that, tables and chairs. I do not know why Bacardi wanted those hideous garage sale chairs, but still, he should have fulfilled that request. But, Michael is an enigma of a man. At one point, as you mentioned, he says that the guests at the event will not be focusing on the details because they will be so ecstatic about being at the Parker (oh, like that is a big deal, lol). However, a few minutes after he says this, he states that if anything goes wrong, they will lose future guests!!!! HUH!?!?!? I am utterly confused.

Overall, the show underscores how poor the service is at the Parker. For the Parker, this is some of the best advertising any hotel can get, and it seems they are just sending themselves to the hotel graveyard! I do not get it, unless Bravo truly hates the Parker. I cannot talk anymore about this show, but I will be tuned in next week!

It's me again. I just remembered that show that aired a few years ago about the Green Valley Ranch outside of Las Vegas. It was very similar to this show about the Parker. Do you remember that show????????

So many things to talk about (none / 0)

I am trying really hard not to be so critical of Welcome to the Parker, but I do think the show makes the Parker look worse than it is. Part of it is--do hotel guests really want to see behind the scenes of a hotel?

Thanks to the Crazy Hotel Workers blog, we already have an idea of what they are saying about us. Did we really need the footage?

Second, I think that Bravo created some crappy situations for the hotel staff to face. The ping pong tournament. The food critic and the man with the ice requests. C'mon that CANNOT be real. And Jonathan Adler's fluffer request? C'mon now.

Anyways, I know people who have stayed there and they loved it. Plus Mister Parker's restaurant looks pretty cool.

I'm rambling but what I am trying to say is that this show just confirms the idea that cool-looking hotels can't be depended on for the staff.

BTW, i LOVE liberace, Adler's dog. I often find myself filming confessionals using my dog's paws to express myself. Seriously. I do.

Also the Parker used to be the first Holiday Inn in California when it was built in 1959!

All reality shows are misnamed because reality is boring {wait...MY reality is boring. Is that better?} Of course they're going to show the bad stuff. Or the good stuff if it's compelling enough like the wedding ring scavenger hunt.

I've never been to the Parker so I can't comment on it but the fine folks at TripAdvisor have a lot to say and it ain't all that great. On top of that, neither AAA nor the Mobil Travel Guide rate the hotel. TripAdvisor says it's a 5 star but from the little bit we can see on TV it looks like a three star.

Coincidentally, for me at least, the woman who was on the point for Bacardi, Natalia, is a former co-worker of mine at a hotel in Florida. We didn't get along so I'm not sure why I mention it, except maybe that I like the sound of my own voice.
