This past weekend we were summoned to South Padre Island, a popular Spring Break spot for college kids, for the wedding of (ironically) an old college roommate.
South Padre Island is a place that we always wanted to visit when we were 21 but eight years later, let's just say the attraction has worn off considerably.
Still out of love for our dear friend, we tripped on down to this Texas vacation isle and spent a night at the Radisson.

The view from the beach
First up, there are no nice hotels in South Padre Island, probably because Spring Breakers come here once a year to wreck the place with vomit, careless boozing and even more careless sex. (Man, those days were fun!) As far as we can tell, the Radisson is the nicest place in town. There's a Sheraton that we considered but the reviews were pretty horrendous. Besides we picked the Radi because it was where most of our friends were staying.

Second, the Radisson is not cheap. Sure, we got a spacious room with a balcony and an ocean view for $255 a night but aside from the bed the rest of the room was worthy of only a Holiday Inn.
We know our duty here is to go into the details of a room and let you know whether its worth staying or not but this is a different situation. We stayed here because we had to. Other than that, we would never stay here and we would probably never return to South Padre Island in the future. The wedding on the beach was lovely and we were kind of excited to be part of the 7/7/07 wedding day but never again. So we're breaking this down into a brief Good and Bad summary.
GOOD

What we liked about the hotel was the beachfront property with easy access, the fun cocktails they served at the hut by the pool, the working air-conditioning in the rooms, the comfy beds and the little hotel cafe that brewed Starbucks.
BAD

What we didn't like was the overcrowded pool, the junky room furniture, the limited room service hours, the expensive sundries in the gift shop, the fish decor in the bathrooms and the overall rundown-ness of the property.
However, if we were here for Spring Break with five other of our newly 21-year-old friends, this place would be memorable. But we weren't and it wasn't. End of Story.
