The issue of Hotel Porn comes and goes throughout the years and now it's definitely back on.
Conservatives are giving Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney a hard time for not doing enough during his decade tenure as a board member of Marriott Hotels.
MORE
Romney claims he had no idea how much revenue was generated by on-demand, in-room adult movies (cough, bs, cough.) He also said the issue never came up in board meetings which is interesting given the Mormon faith of the Marriott family as well as Romney. Then Romney spouted some political BS which we really don't find useful enough to write again.
Hotel porn is also a tricky issue because no one really knows just how much hotels are making. But a "helpful" hotel porn opponent estimates that hotels make at least $500 million a year (industry-wide) from adult movies. As usual we think that the conservative side is getting a little bit gung-ho on this issue. We think having Paris Hilton and Britney Spears on magazine covers is more damaging to America's youth than someone's private in-room movie decision-making.
Lo and behold, we find that Bill Marriott sorta kinda agrees with us.
In June 2000, J.W. "Bill" Marriott Jr., the son of Marriott's founder, defended the distribution of pornographic movies, saying they were inseparable from the rest of the chain's TV offerings.
"The in-room entertainment operators who provide our systems rely upon a certain volume of movie types in order to be economically viable," Bill Marriott wrote to Bill Johnson, executive director of the Michigan-based American Decency Association. "If we were to eliminate the 'R' and non-rated offerings, the systems would not be economic."
Ok well, not reallly. Turns out Bill just has the bottom line in his sights.
