In Western Australia, the Sheraton Perth Hotel used to be the top end of luxury. Recently, guests have recognized that its rooms are a bit small and that the decor is well, not quite from today. On top of that, it's a "self-rated" 5-star, and while it was at the top of the pack when Perth was a hick town on the other side of Australia, it's floundering a little now that Perth gets a spot on more and more itineraries.

But don't cancel your booking yet.

The Sheraton's location is fantastic, central to the city and with some of the rooms having excellent views over the Swan River (and at the right time of year, the Red Bull Air Race).

And they are now undertaking a A$20 million refurbishment, taking area it's been using as office space and turning this into 96 executive rooms and suites. There will also be a new club lounge, brasserie and (for the business travelers amongst you) a new meeting room.

Projected completion is October, but the economic boom in Western Australia means everything's taking longer than normal, so check into that closer to the date. It's not clear if anything'll be done to spruce up the old rooms, though, so make sure you ask for a new one.
