Mickey in the Summer: Disney World's 'Wonderful Weeks' Hotel Deals

Disney World is not for everyone. For example, it is not for us. We just can't imagine going to Disney World now that we are past the age of 12. But we understand that a lot of you have children or grandchildren who beg mercilessly to go to Disney World.

Yet, even though you will give in to the cries (literally) of your beloved little ones, Disney World is crazy expensive! There's an alternative though. It's called the Wonderful Weeks of Disney and it's promoted by the theme park itself. Each season, the theme park highlights its lighter weeks when you can expect fewer crowds and hopefully get some bargains.

For the Summer Season, the lighter weeks begin August 12 and run through September 27, which is also during hurricane season. So you take that risk of getting rained out.

While the tickets are still crazy--$67 a day for people 10 and older, $56 a day for ages 3-9--there is a bit of a break on the hotel scene.

MORE

We planned out a trip from August 19-25 for two adults and two children, ages 6 and 8. At first, we only looked at hotel prices.

The first result was for the Disney's Grand Floridian Resort at $375 a night which is still a rip-off and imagine multiplying that rate by at least three nights. We scrolled down the page and found some more reasonable options like the Animal Kingdom Lodge for $215 a night and the Disney Caribbean Beach Resort was listed for $145 a night.

The All Star Themed Resorts (Movies, Music and Sports) were even cheaper at $82 a night. You could also set up at the Wilderness Camp ground for $42 if you feel like roughing it in the wilds of Orlando in extreme heat and humidity. (One word: Bugs.)

We then tried doing a package combo at the Wilderness resort where we got a Courtyard View Bunk bed room that sleeps four (one queen-sized bed, one bunk bed) for six nights plus 7 day Park Hopper tickets for everyone that totaled $2,984.20. It also includes a $15 food and non-alcoholic beverages certificate to Planet Hollywood, a free round of golf for one person at the Disney mini-golf courses, a PhotoPass 5x7 certificate, and a Sea Raycers discount.

Despite the packaging option, it's not really a deal. You might be able to save more if you book things a la carte. Although, feel free to tell us differently.
